Few issues with a 98 Boxster

I have a few issues with a 98 boxster. First of, the car won't start. Battery is ok, but the car won't crank. I'm assuming its the starter. I bought a starter off of ebay to install, but when I went to install it, I can't put the roof up to access the motor. I have had the hard top on for about a year and have not had a reason to operate the top.
When I tried to put the top up, it would not move, no noise, nothing. I'm thinking that maybe its the motor. My question is, is there a way to manually put the top up, to be able to access the engine?

I appreciate any help.

Don't know what the problem is with your 1998. But the 986 has a cronic problem with the ignition switch. Have you ruled out the switch before moving on to the starter?

My ignition switch does all kinds of crazy stuff......my head lights wount work, AC wount blow air,....... but all of it is fixed by moving the key about 1/4 of an inch back where it makes little clicking noise and everything works again.
