want to change tan interior to black

what are my options, if any, for switching a tan interior to black aside from swapping every single tan interior piece for black? any suggestions would help. thanks.

Anthony, don't know for sure, but go to www.colorplus.com. The owner of those products is great. Her name is Joanne. She might have a leather dye system that could help you accomplish part of your task. Give her a call or send her an e-mail. She is very responsive and was a recent "door prize" sponsor for our early May Tail of the Dragon Trip.

Maybe you can pull off the leather covers on the seats and replace with black. A good leather shop could make these for you. Or buy from Porsche...but that would be $$$. New seats, like the GT3 seat.....$$$...again.

Other leather trim pieces...take off...and re-cover with black leather...could be a DIY project.

One more suggestion. Give these guys a call too, they are in your home State and may have some ideas. They sell leather too.

I know someone also makes a vinyl dye for the dash. I dyed the tan dash in my old Fiero GT black. You have to remove the pieces and spray on the dye with an air spray gun.

With the crazy price of knick knack porche parts, it might be in your favor to sell your current car and put what you would have speant on the swap towards a newer model in the colors you want.

I would imagine that the cost of that swap could easily buy you featrures you do not have now.

I would prefer the tan, over the black so maybe find someone local to swap cars and keep your own mods. What model and year do you have?

There is a local Boxster owner who changed the interior himself. Even the dash. Jinijazz on Renntech.

Taking the entire dash apart sounds like an ambitious undertaking. But buying a new car might be easier.

If you are good with a wrench, you could try to find someone who has a black interior that is willing to trade up for free but they also would have to be good with a wrench.

Here is another picture of Jinijazz's 1999 that I took in November at a tech session at RMG in Mountain View.

The original interior was Boxster red. Only the red seats stayed.

This car had your standard 4 spoke steering wheel used in 1999. He put in a 3 spoke but got a red air bag.

Lot of work.

He now has a speed yellow 987.

I went to a little upholstery shop run by a couple of Salvedorian guys here on Long Island, thinking I would get a good price on changing leather on my stock seats. I checked out there work, and it was great, but when he saw the Porsche...he said "Oh, this is an expensive car!!!" Long story short..he wanted $1000.00 to re-do them in red leather. (only the front, back in vinyl) Oh well, cheaper to buy some racing seats in red.(non GT3 ofcourse)

i wonder if he would give you the same price quote if you rolled up in there with a brocken down/rusted pickup and those seats in the bed...really

CJ_Boxster 06-19-2007 10:21 AM

Yeah, you should take your porsche seats out and mount them in a cheaper car like a Econoline Van and ask for them for a quote.

986speedster 06-19-2007 11:10 AM

Funny you guys mention this, because I did call first and ask them how much would it cost to re-upholster 2 bucket seats. He quoted me $400.00 for vinyl, and $550.00 for leather. When I brought it there is when he said "oh expensive car!" so &*%%^ him. My co-worker/friends cousin is Will Castro from the "Unique Whips" show on Speedvision. Thats my next stop. hOPEFULLY HE WILL DO ME A FAVOR.

I just pray that I NEVER see my dash looking that way.
