Door subwoofers upgraded
I got tired of the lack of bass in my car.
I didn't want a sub box, so I went with Focal 5WS sub woofers in the doors using the stock ported enclosures. It took about 5 minutes of dremel work to get them to fit properly. Surprisingly amazing results, those little 5.25" subs can really pound! Just thought I'd mention this upgrade in case there are others who want more bass, but don't want a sub box. BTW these were also the only 5.25" subs I could find. :] Alpine PDX 4.150 Focal Polyglass 100v2 slims in the dash Focal 5WS Subs in the doors Great $1000 setup. |
Where do you buy the Focals? Are these the ones you used? http://cgi.ebay.com/FOCAL-POLYGLASS-130VSLIM-100W-SPEAKER-KIT-5-WOOFERS_W0QQitemZ280124339410QQihZ018QQcategoryZ18 800QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I am interested in upgrading the door speakers, but I don't want to do the whole new baffle thing. How much "dremeling" was required? |

Yeah, the 5WS is part of the Utopia line, but they were recently replaced with the 13WS.
Similar in performance and sound quality, but the 5WS is MUCH cheaper now. Plus the mount depth is same as stock. :P I dremeled about 1.5mm around one corner of the stock enclosure. Literally 2.5 minutes worth of work per side. That link is to the wrong size for the dash, your looking for 100 V Slim. http://focal-america.com/Products/Polyglass/PolyglassV2.html |
Are you using an amp for them or just running through radio? Where can you buy these for a good price? Those speakers look great, focal is one of the best brands, I have some mbquartz and still think focal is better.

Eric-
I'm inclined to think I'm better off having my 6 1/2" mid bass drivers AND an 8" sub as opposed to dual 5 1/4" "subs" and having only a 4" driver for all mid bass, however I am very interested to hear your system. I'm in Rochester NY, and actually am going up to Dunnville this friday to play on the track. Let me know if theres some way we could get together in the near to distant future. Patrick |
