I'm going to start Auto-Xing my Boxster soon and I need a helmet. Are these good prices?

those are good prices. make sure you get a Snell SA2005 rated helmet. most AutoX and nearly all DE will not allow M rated (FYI, the difference is that the SA rated helmets are fireproof).

also check out discoveryparts.com; their prices are also very good and they are a serious PCA sponsor.

There was a recent thread on helmets. If you plan to ever do a DE event I would advise that you get a full face helmet and you buy it locally so you can have it fitted appropriately. Each manufacturer has a different fit and one may be better for your head than another. I don't think saving a $100 on a helmet if worth the risk if you have one that isn't fitted correctly.

Bell and Simpson make very good helmets.

i got me a Bell sa2000, and its a really nice fit.
i like bell helmets, and plus, they have been around for a while, so they know what they are doing

I agree with drb and insite..that's why i'm still using a loaner to save enough money to buy a good helmet here @ Zoom cycle accessories

blink, when are you going? is it the one in Altamont speedway?

Hi,

There are other differences between 'M' and 'SA'/'K' (Kart) Snell Foundation rated Helmets.

In addition to not being subjected to Flammability Testing, 'M' (Motorcycle) rated Helmets are only tested for a single impact, after which the Helmet is considered compromised (whether it actually is or not - it is not subjected to, or need pass, multiple impact testing). Also, 'M' Rated Helmets are allowed a broader Field of View (DOT required) (Broader FOV generally equals less protection).

The 'SA'/'K' rated Helmets are tested for multiple impacts and must retain their intergrity through these to gain approval. In addition, these Helmets are not allowed as broad an FOV as the 'M' rated ones. Then, as mentioned, they must also pass Flammability Testing.

But, due to the natural degredation of the materials used and the stresses of common use, every Helmet, whether 'M' or 'SA'/'K' Rated should be replaced every 5 years, regardless of how often they may or may not have been used.

Hopefully I can go my first event at Infineon Raceway on July 21st and watch. I don't want to just jump in it,I'd like to see others do it first.

yap, I did the same thing...went to 2 AX to watch and see how they do it, kinda get the feel of it and it won't feel weird as much as going there for the first time.

where's infineon? is that by your neighborhood?

Hi,

@ Blinkwatt - smart to have a look-see before trying your hand. You'll be amazed at what you'll pick up just spectating.

Also, ask a few people for a ride-along, most will be willing to accomodate you, especially if they're doing practice or Buck Runs. In some cars, the additional weight actually can help in turning speeds and balance, so you're not likely to be slowing anyone down. Have Fun!!
