Exhaust Tip Cleaning

The only thing that will tell you that my "new to me" 2005 S is not brand new is the shmutz on the exhaust tip. The car has 9,100 miles on it. What is the best way you've found to clean up the exhaust tips and are there such things as polished stainless or chrome camoflage tips? I remember seeing them for other cars somewhere.

Thanks, Mike

fine polishing steel wool (000 grade i believe)
it will take you no more than about 10 seconds to have perfectly shiny tips

I tried the fine polishing steel wool 000 grade myself tonight and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for this post. I had this same question myself. I bought some of the 000 or 0000 steel wool and some metal polish and I will give it a try today.

no problem.
on my other car i tried just about everyting, and stuff seemed to work OK, but nothing compares to the steel wool method, as it takes more time for you to lay down and get yourself ready to clean them than actual cleaning itself ;)

For chrome tips the product 'Bar Keepers Friend' works wonderful. It's a powder that you can rub on with a wet cloth, takes everything off but isn't very abrasive so it doesn't scratch the finish. I use this on my Touareg chrome tips and its great.

MikeinLA, if you want the real crome tips for the 987S Boxster, here's what you want, you can get these from Sunset Porsche for about $330.:

Nice, thanks for this post I've been wondering the same thing.

If you prefer the look of a round tip, the Cayman Sport tip also fits the 987.

Hi,

I keep an old used piece of Detailing Clay to clean the Exhaust Tip. Works the business...

I had a 987 base with the standard tip which imo is just an eyesore...single or dual. I'd echo Bmuss's sentiments, and go as far as to say that the chromed tips (with I have on my current 987 S) should be the first aesthetic option owners should consider. Just a world of difference.

You can polish the standard tip/s all you want but we all know they'll look like crap after your first drive.

Tried the steel wool last night and am delighted with the results!
Many thanks for the suggestion
