Thers has to be somthing major wrong with my car

So as i was driving today, a 2000-2002 bmw 530i was playing with me.so as soon as he passed, i downshifted to try to pass him, and i was shocked when i couldnt overtake him. :( There somthing wrong with my car or the boxster is much slower then i though :o btw my cel is on

Quick specs search shows a 2001 530i with a 3L I6 makes ~225 with a curb weight of about 3350.

That's weight/power of 14.8 vs. 99 boxster's 14.0. Drag coef makes it a toss up, and if yer top was down I think the Bimmer wins. Chances are if he played with you, he may have done something to his car, too. It's very close, and barring any major factors, I don't see why you should expect to beat him easily.

If you wanted to make a point of it, you shoulda baited him into a twisty road :D

Racing around with your check engine light on sounds like a good idea.

I was recently driving a 2003 BMW 330i (manual) w/ sport package. It had much better acceleration than my 2001 box (auto) and probably handled just as well.

yeah alot of cars are faster then a auto boxster, not being mean or anything.

The 530 is brisk for a large sedan. If he had a 6 speed and perhaps a few minor mods, I can see him leaving you a bit.

The other thing to keep in mind here - it sounds like he was already going faster than you and accelerating by the time you downshifted and dropped the hammer. Even if you are slightly faster mechanically, that scenario gives him no small lead since you have to start out making up for lost ground before you can even catch up to him, much less pass, and I imagine you both backed off reasonably early since it is the street, so you would have had little time to reverse the situation.

The up-side is, that is a nice car – I got humbled at a stoplight by a Mazdaspeed 6 last Sunday. It was all in good fun, but that just seems wrong…

My company car in Germany is a 530 wagon with a 6 speed, you might be shocked by how quick and good the handling is. The car can easily do 245 KPH on the Autobahn and handles the twisities quite well. I have taken it on both the Nurburing and Hockenheim and would probaly replace my Boxster with one if I needed the hauling space and could get the sport options here in the States.

If your CE light is related to your MAF or your O2 sensors, the ECU has probably taken the wind out of your sails, so to speak, by adjusting the air/fuel mixture. You really need to get that looked at so you can get back into the accelleration game knowing your car is running at peak performance.

That could have easily been the single reason that Bimmer pulled on you.

CE lights can indicate a million things, hence the name "dummy light". However, ignoring the warning is not doing your engine any good and can even cause permanent damage.

BMW makes pretty sporting cars. A base box with auto is not a very zippy car. Looks ain't everything...

Trying to convince the woman she NEEDS the twin turbo Beemer... hehe...

The BMW 5-series is a sedan for car enthusiasts in my opinion. That vehicle is a repeat offender when it comes to "playing" on the highway I find.

When I get my family, I'm gonna shoot for a 5. They'rrrrre great!
