Spark plug gap??

Anybody knows the required spark plug gap on the OEM Beru plugs for a 2002 Box? Thanks!

CJ_Boxster 05-30-2007 07:48 AM

for the 2.5 ltr engine 0.35

porschedude 05-30-2007 08:06 AM

Mine is a 2.7 L. 2002 Box. I don't know if the plug gap is the same for 2.5L. Please advise. Thanks!

The spec for the 4 side electrode plug is something like 1.6 mm, but I do not know how you would measure it.

porschedude 05-30-2007 08:48 AM

1.6 mm would be 0.063 inches. I wonder if those plug gappers can measure it..it's been awhile since I used one. Otherwise I have to use a micrometer or vernier calipers. I guess I would measure from the tip of the vertical prong to the white porcelain thing. I am more used to measuring on a conventional single prong plug.

According to my service manual Boxsters MY 1997 - 2004 all get a spark plug gap of 1.66mm + 0.05mm for all plug brands.

Adam 07-29-2007 12:56 PM

So the Beru spark plugs come pre-gapped to 1.66mm?

Tool Pants 07-29-2007 02:04 PM

If people are using the Bently manual then there are errors.

The 1997-1999 2.5 uses a 2 side electrode plug. The gap is .8 mm.

The 2000 -2004 2.7/3.2 uses a 4 side electrode plug. The gap is 1.6 mm.

You can see both styles of plugs in the picture.

Damn Tool Pants,I swear you have a picture of everything!

Tool Pants 07-29-2007 03:30 PM

Almost.

You can check the gap on the 2 side electrode plug. The factory shop manual says .8 mm. Bentley says 1.6 mm but that is for the 4 electrode plug.

No clue how you would measure/check the gap on a 4 side electrode plug. That style plug is said to be pre-gapped from the factory.

Too many plug threads going on at the same time.

The question about berol plugs from Porsche coming pre-gapped was never answered on this thread. This afternoon, I'm changing my plugs and the berol ones (2 sided) for my 97 look ungapped.

Anyone know for sure if they're pregapped or not?

RobZ 08-09-2008 01:57 PM

I have the same question. I purchased my set from Suncoast and have heard that they are and that they are not pre-gapped. I was under the assumption that because you need to specify your year and motor they were pre-gapped.

RandallNeighbour 08-09-2008 05:15 PM

Ok, Rob, I threw caution to the wind today....

1) The porsche 2 prong plugs for my MY97 were very close to .8 mm as ToolPants said they should be... more like .9 though. I left them the way they were and only fiddled with one or two of them that seemed far too close or too far away from the center post.

2) The plugs I removed today were gapped far more than the ones that I put in.

The car runs well, so I think that checking them would be good to do when you get to it.

The project isn't difficult, but does take a lot of time if you've never done it before. The first one took me 30 minutes. The next two on the same side took 15 minutes each. The three on the other side took all of 20 minutes tops. Learning curve.

Tool Pants 08-09-2008 10:24 PM

For your amusement.

3 electrode plug used on an air cooled.

RandallNeighbour 08-10-2008 05:55 AM

Jeff, that motor had to perform far better with new plugs. That thing looks nasty.

Yskander 06-20-2017 08:36 AM

So, I'm about to use champion double platinum spaced at. 50 on a 2001 2.7
Would this cause a problem?

paulofto 06-20-2017 01:19 PM

Holy Resurrected Thread Batman!!

lkchris 06-20-2017 02:38 PM

It's a German car ... the factory specified plug will be pregapped correctly.
Don't worry, be happy.
