Thoughts on the Oval Exhaust Tip

Hi,
I am looking into changing my exhaust tip from the oval to the dual tip like the S. I was wondering if anyone knows if this part can just be switched with the oval exhaust or if it requires welding, etc.? Also, does anyone have the part number for the dual S exhaust tip or know were I can get a similar one?
What are your opinions on the oval exhaust? Is it worth doing? Could it be done for around $60?
Thanks!

These tips also pop up on eBay on a semi-regular basis. It's a bolt-on job (at least on the 987) but a PITA to get off.

Call the parts department to make sure. And call Sunset Porsche for potential better pricing- 503-641-8600. Ask for Phil.

Does your current tip bolt on? If so, I bet these will work. I don't know how the 986 is set-up. Sorry.

Hi Rick,

What year is your car? the 03+ seem to bolt on while the older ones are part of the Muffler.
If you car is older you best bet is to find an 03+ exhaust with the bolt on tips or an older 986S exhaust with the dual tips. My car is an S, perhaps the oval tip is differant
I just sold my 01 S exhaust for fifty bucks!

I like the dual tips that came on my Dansk sports exhaust. They were welded on mine, but I think now Dansk offers them as tips alone, that you can bolt onto their exhausts. Maybe it will fit the 03+ factory exhausts. Starting from 2003, the Boxster and Boxster S tips were bolted on the exhaust, whereas pre-03, they were welded on.

I have an 01 Boxster Base 2.7 and it has the 2 bolts, one on each side of the OVAL chrome tip. So it should be easy for you to remove if you want the "S" dual tip. Porsche's Tequipment also sells this tip as a factory option. I like the dual stacked version, single oval myself.

@porsche986spyder: The oval chrome tip you have goes over the existing oval tip welded on your muffler. The 03+ tips will not bolt onto your pre-03 muffler, because these tips are made to be bolted on the 03+ mufflers that have no tips welded on already.

Oh yeah, the only thing you can do for a Boxster for $60 is buy a tank of gas...barely!

This only works on 03-up boxsters. I have an 02 S twin tip exhaust sitting in the garage, PM me if you're interested in it.

It's a '99. But interestingly enough it has a bolt on tip. It has got two screws on each side. So bmwm750, pm me a picture.

You most likely have the same chrome tip as bmussati. These are tip covers that go over the original muffler's tip that is welded in place, and were an option for those who wanted a larger looking tip in chrome. The 03+tips will not fit on your muffler...if I recall correctly, they bolt on not side to side, but from the bottom or top, and only bolt onto mufflers without tips already welded on.

I like the oval tip, just looks more modern... to me at least. I hated the orignal oval though, ugly... So I got my dremel and cut it off and cut a new oval tip to fit, and had it welded on. Black chrome, I like it since I know its the only one like it, lol. But if I had to do it again, I think I might have gotten regular chrome.
