Re-manufactured engine- Reliability

I was just on the PCA site and read something about re-manufactured engines. Basically, the post said that re-manufactured engines DO NOT have the same flaws as the original. Apparently, the claim is that all the flaws and kinks are worked out of the new engine.

For example, the problems that plagued the 97-01 boxsters (ie- oil leaks, intermediate shaft failures etc) should not occur again in a re-manufactured (new) engine from Porsche.

Anyone's two cents either validating or disproving this claim?
Has anyone had a second failure after replacing their engine with a new engine?

I'm asking because I might just replace my blown '99 2.5L with a
new re-manufactued 2.5L, due to cost-cutting. This is the most cost effient means of getting a new engine in my car, but I'm worried about any re-occurring failures.

cheers,

Not true. The IMS flaw continues to this day. My neighbor lost her 04 engine at 12K to this issue. There is another post right now on an 05 engine that went bad.

Ditto on the RMS issue. These continue till this day.

Interesting. Its sad to know that these design flaws still remain even in the newer engines. I guess theres no escaping it.

But wouldn't remanufactured engine have a warranty?

I believe it is a 12/12 warranty.

But if the warranty runs out then I could still end up in the same predicament (engine failure).

how much would a reman engine cost from pca?

Yup.

It doesn't happen everyday but it DOES happen.

I've been calling around for quotes on a 2.5L and it seems as if they range from $8000 to $11000 Canadian dollars (engine price only). This price if for a brand new re manu'ed engine straight from Porsche.

Were it me, and I was in this situation out of warranty, I would either: A) Man up and put a 3.4 in the car as there are plenty of low mileage 3.4s to be had for around $5k and you'd have a hell of a car, or B) pick up a 2.5 with lower mileage for $3k-$4k and hope for the best. You could go through 3 2.5s that way for the price of one re-man from PCA. If the re-man had say, a 3/36 warranty, I'd consider that good insurance. 12/12 to me is a joke and I"d save a boatload of money and take my chances.

Good points. I'm still shopping around, but I'm leaning more towards a new 2.5L engine with a 36month warranty. A few places offer the 36 months but for a cost. I think it'll be worth the purchase
