Tiptronic transmission noise? @ 2.5k
Of course, I'll end up getting this checked out, but in a full inspection a while back the mechanic didn't say anything about it being a problem ...
From the first day I purchased my boxster about 1,000 miles ago I noticed the noise coming from the front center area of my car. I can only really hear it when I have the hard top on, so it's not loud, but it's enough that my friend noticed it without me mentioning it to him. The noise happens at about 2.5K RPM... doesnt matter if car is hot or cold, I think. The noise can be described as a .... slight rattle, I guess.... I dont want to say grind because it's not... I don't feel the car lose power or anything. It's like a half-second humming sound only during acceleration passing through 2.5k in any gear, it seems. Anyway... .anyone have insight before I get it checked out? The noise is definetely coming from the front.... what's up there that could make this noise? Thanks, |
Hi,
Model Year? Always include this - help others help you! It is not Tiptronic related - the Transaxle is in the back. Could be any number of things from a bad Alignment (my strongest suspiscion, a worn Bushing, a failing Wheel Bearing , to an imbalanced or worn Tire(s), improper Tire inflation, or even lose lugnuts. Try to see if it's worse when you turn in either or both directions. Check Tire Pressure and if you haven't had an alignment done, get one. If these don't do the trick, you'll need to have someone look at and/or drive the car. Hope this helps... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
Thanks for the response, MNBoxster.
The model year is in my signature. :p All of those things you suggest are problems I would much rather have over transmission problems, BUT ... the only thing is the noise happens right at 2.5k RPMs... consistantly. |

It's not unusual for any of these things to have a sympathetic or harmonic vibration occur at a specific RPM range. There is no direct link between the Transaxle and the Front End of the car - not even a Dipstick or Fluid Reservoir. Good Luck!... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
that's very comforting
I noticed today the noise isn't noticiable when the car is hot... so I dunno... maybe I am just being paranoid that my tranny will go out on the same day as my engine and my whole Porsche experience will be done with  |
Is is make this noise when you go over bumpy road surfaces or is it consistant?

Try to drive another Tip boxster and see if the noise is there and/or take it to a porsche specialists and see what they think. They shouldn't charge you anything for a 5 min test drive.

Think about it - it can in no way be associated with the Tiptronic S transaxle if the noise is from the Front of the Car - IMPOSSIBLE!... Happy Motroring!... Jim'99 |
