I'm not sure I like the attention :(
 

Well, since the snow & salt stopped ruining my car's perfect complexion, I have been getting compliments almost every day on my car.


I always appreciate compliments, but many times I am irked at the fact that these people don't know crap about my car or cars in general.



Usually it's, "How fast do that really go?", was one I got at a stop light recently.



Just the other day, one lady asked why the blue tape was all over my car. I told her I was racing (autocrossing) and she was like, "What does it do in the 1/4 mile?"


I replied, "I dunno. Maybe 14.2 ...?"


I couldn't believe her response. "14.2 for a PorSH? Ehh.. (as if to say, 'that's not that good') I had a mustang that ran low 9s."




Then yesterday at some rednecky gas station somewhere in upstate NY. Nice folks, but of course the inevitable, "How fast does it go?"



Sometimes I try to explain as briefly as possible that it's not that type of car, but most of the time I just let them think what they want


Just wish I got more compliments based on knowledge of the car itself and what a masterpiece it is rather than merely how PRETTY IT LOOKS. I know it's a looker... but that's not all it is :-\

More importantly, how did you like your first autocross?

Now I am trying to find other organizations since this one is taking a break until may.



I just want to be more competitive. Doesn't help that they class me in such a high class when I should be in a lower class. Oh, but it's a Porsche!! :mad:

LOl...why not. 9's @ 161 mph and top speed of 220mph...redline limited. See if they call BS next time?

or better yet start throwing out some randome numbers and letters for like a whole minute, i bet they will be confused to hell :)

When people ask how fast my 'box is, I tell them, "The speedo goes up to 175." I've had it to maybe 85 (in the middle of the Yukon Territory).

Yeah, I suppose. After all, they DO want some entertaining #s. Might as well deliver the entertainment to them.

I've never had someone ask me how fast it goes, but I'd just say "Fast enough," smile, and walk away.

However, I have had people say "Nice PorSH" to me, often accompanied by a question or another statement. I always just reply, "It's Por-sche, with two syllables," and leave it at that. If they don't pronounce it right, then they don't really care enough about the vehicle to need to ask me a question.

Edit: Oh oh oh, if someone does ask me how fast it goes, I'm actually going to now say "Eh, not very... it just doesn't compare to my Ferrari." and say it very seriously like I'm disappointed. Now I really want someone to ask me. (I don't even like most Ferrari's, but at least the average person will know the name).

Wow, that's just bad. I, myself, even pronounce it "wrong". Like I said in the other thread, when I lived in Germany I pronounced it "right" because that is how everyone did it. Now that I live here I pronounce it "wrong" because that is how it is here.

As for the OP, next time someone asks you how fast the car is just give them the time from your best Auto-X or track run. That should confuse the heck out of them and make for an entertaining experience.

I don't personally like to correct strangers if they are wrong or make an incorrect statement. For example, if I said, "It's PORSH-UH!" They'd probably go home thinking, "Snobby ass Porsh owners... So rude!!!"





Maybe I'll just tell them it's the fastest car I've ever owned .. since it is.

Geez, between the cars I would get comments over (AE 300ZX turbo, 911SC, and the Boxster S), I have only had 2 people make a car comment to me over the last 10 years.

Does everyone else get people commenting to them all the time?

edit: OK, the more I think about it, I can think of maybe another 5 to 10 times I have gotten a comment over a car but that is still over the last 10 years or so.....

I usually get a comment when I drive. Most of the time I get, "nice car," or "sweet ride." I politely thank them and say something like, "she's fun to drive."

i get somments/compliments on my car all the time...
we first i think its the weird looking color that people look, and then they see that its a porsche, so they gime like thumbs up or some kind of a compliment.
and when people do ask me if its fast, my usual response is "fast enough to get you into some major trouble"

I used to have the same midnight blue/tan as you and agree that when clean, it's quite the eye-catcher.

I also wanted to add that your new avatar pic of the Box in action is great ! Although I think the last time I added something like "live to drive" over a car picture was when I was doodling in my eighth grade geometry notebook.

I don't get all -that- many comments. The most typical is "Nice car," with a smile or a thumbs up. I thank them and move on.

regarding your new sig, did you tape up your plates? because as I can see in that photo your rear spoiler is activated meaning at some point during your lap (given that it was a sub 45 second course--lots of straight action) you surpassed "the speed" necessary to deploy the spoiler....unless your raised it manually?

those insurance guys are always looking for an excuse to raise rates on a teen age driver. I never post my full name on my lap times. Its usually a character from Animal House.

I forgot to tape up my plates that time, but this recent week I remembered to.


Not to worry...I manually deployed the spoiler. They intentionally keep people at lower speeds. Highest I've gone is around 58mph on a course and that was a poorly designed course.



And I also changed my name to only show the first letter of my last name :D



Phew...beat the insurance company this time.

oh yeah I forgot about the 12 hairpins they put in at the last minute.
But 35mph sure feels faster than it looks...

It has a lot to do with where you live. Here in the SF bay area, Boxsters are not as common as Accords, but close. I do get the occasional kids on bikes that say, "whoa, nice car" as I drive by, but very rarely do I get any, "how fast" questions.

In my case you are absoultly right!

My friend just got an Accord, and couldn't believe he paid more for it than I did for my boxster. I told him it's because the boxster is so poorly built, look how easily the roof comes off! :)

Wow...you're what my dad calls a "snooty" Porsche owner. 99% of the american public says Porsche with one syllable. I guess snooty Porsche owners do exist. I can't believe you correct total strangers.....that's rude imo. Sometimes I say porsh sometimes I pronounce it porsche. Who cares?

"Nice car"...."Whoarrrr"......"Hot ride" and so on.

I love it! :) I look after my car, and when it shines.....I shine! :cool:


I have been asked the usual, "How Fast?"....."How Much?" I usually reply Enough!
That way its not rude, then they walk away without their answer :p :p :D

Anyway, I hardly get any compliments on mine. And mine's the best looking one I've ever seen! (So humble.) They are relatively common around these parts.

Only once has some one asked me how fast is it -and that was this week! I told them that on a track with curves, it flies. In a straight line... leave that to the Mustangs (and Accords these days).

I get compliments often. I've seen people walk to the back and say "It's a Boxster". They probably don't even know who makes it.

Also have people pronounce it Porsh. I don't correct them because they probably don't realize they are saying it incorrectly and mean no harm. I was in a car audio store a couple of days ago and the owner called it a Porsh several times then sheepishly said maybe he should call it a Porsche. I said it didn't bother me but some Porshe owners would be greatly offended.

As far as the "how fast" question goes, I'm like Schnell! and say the speedo goes to 180. (Hey Schnell!, there's an extra tick hidden by the tach - you just picked up 5mph.)

I tend to agree. When I was shopping for my car I briefly contemplated this scenario. In my area no one pronounces it Porsh-uh and many would consider it snobbish if I pronounced it that way. Usually if I just mention the make I say I own a "Porsh" if mention the model as well I usually say "Porsh-uh Boxster" as it seems to roll of the tongue better. I can't say it matters to me, however I know I'd be upset if people knowingly mis-pronounced my name.

If it's snooty to pronounce things/correct people then fine, I'm snooty and I'll be the first one to admit it.

Porsche is a family name, and has always been two-syllables, and if you say it wrong in front of me I'll correct you. The same way I'd correct you if you said Raynalt instead of Renault (ray-noh), and I definitely don't own one of those. Believe it or not, you can correct someone without saying like an ****************************, but unfortunately 99.9% of the time people follow calling it a PorSCH up with asking me how much a paid, which is why I just don't answer the question and move on with my life.

Son of a... apparently this computer is still logged in as my old name. This is 986 Girl. *grrs*

There's a lot of Boxsters here as well.


Maybe the 987s draw more attention than the 986s because they look like newer cars?
