1124 & 1126/MAF

I'm throwing the (apparently) somewhat common 1124 and 1126 codes, and a third which I can't remember, which I believe is the gas cap *gr*.

Anyway, I've read just about everything I can find about the 1124/1126 issue, and it seems like there are two common solutions: new MAF, or theres a vaccuum leak someplace.

I started taking a look at MAF's and am just a little confused. I'm looking for an Air Flow Mass Sensor, and not the Air Flow Mass Meter, correct? This is all assuming that it IS the MAF in the first place.

Also, I believe I read that some people have tried just cleaning the MAF itself before bothering to replace it?

I have to get the car inspected next month, and since I don't think I can reset the code and have it stay off long enough to get it inspected and clear, I think I need to take care of this soon.

Any help is appreciated :)

Follow these steps and eliminate them one by one;

-Smoke test the intake

-Check your AOS for any leaks

-Clean your MAF w/ electrical contact cleaner

-Replace the AOS w/ 'j' tube ($105 or so from Sunset)

-At this point I would take it to an indie to have it checked out because the MAF is $240+ and o2 sensors are $480+,you don't want to waste money on the wrong part.

Good Luck!

why can't diagnostic codes be more simple. It's always it could be this.... or could be that....Are all other cars like this? I've never has a CE on my BMW so I wouldn't know.

Just for the record, here's what it turned out to be.

1. Crank case breather vent case is cracked which is making it run lean.
2. Check valve for the air pump is leaking.

Also need to be fixed, but aren't the cause of the cel
1. A bunch of leaking gaskets giving me a bunch of little oil leaks.
2. Outter portion of the throttle cable is frayed.

Total, parts & labor: $1200

If one were to perform the smoke test, where would be the best input source for the smoke? Last time a mechanic ran the smoke test, he pulled the vacum hose from the FPR but no smoke leaks detected anywhere.

Yeah, my mechanic is extra thourough, and knows me and my driving styles very well. Thankfully he said a lot of this is all going to be work in the same area/requiring the same prep work, so doing it all now cuts down a lot of labor and such.

Ah well, I gotta have a healthy baby if I'm going to beat on her for the next couple months at the track and autocross!
