Tranny Popped today.....Update!!!
AHHHHH.. Tranny went today under normal driving conditions. My guy thinks possibly the ring gear.. Was just driving in second and heard a huge pop and it was over..
Has anyone put a 6speed to a 2.5 motor yet? If so are there any differences? Any ratio problems? :ah: |
Sorry to hear about your transmission, keep us posted on what you end up doing. BTW, does anyone know if there is a weight difference in the 5-speed vs the 6-speed transmission in our cars?
Ed  |
I don't know about the 986 but for the 987 it is:
Boxster 2,855 pounds 2,987 Tip Boxster S 2,965 pounds 3,053 Tip The Tip is a 5-speed in both The Boxster is a 5-speed manny tranny, while the Boxster S is a 6-speed. |
ring gear ?! c'mon... cv joint
|
tranny probs
i learned this the hard way......
you can have a 5-speed tranny and the tip serviced / rebuilt you can only have the 6 speed replaced, close to $4k since you have a 2.5, consider yourself lucky |
BPR. CV JOINT? Please tell me more..
J |
cv - flexible connection between tranny and axle.
As a test: put on emergency brake start engine put tranny in any gear & let out clutch have someone watch cv joint if cv joint is bad, the joint will rotate, however axle will not |
I am 99% sure that my tech checked that asap when I got the car too him. I was driving the car under no power when this happend. Then just pop.
|
cv joint still my first guess, then clutch (slipping lately?). But ring gear is waaaay out there. Even further than NY.
|
it was very odd... BUT... I did have a issue getting the car back into gear while I was still rolling like I had no clutch. When we checked the the cv joints you could hear the car in each different gear but still no output to the axles as far as my tech could tell. I wish it to be as small as a cv joint. I will shoot him an email to link him to the forum maybe I can get some feedback from him through the forum. I am pretty sure that he will not be able to get to look at it till next week. I can go there tommorrow also and check again on the dv joints. Thanks for your help on this subject.

Sort of like replacing a failed water heater at home; you had hot water before it failed, you have hot water after it's replaced, you just have a lighter wallet. Having a nice new clutch is a good upgrade in my opinion, (providing this was the original '99 clutch.) |
You mean the throwout bearing? Happened in my '70 911... driving, and POP! The clutch no worky. Turns out the throwout bearing had ripped out of the pressure plate. The clutch was worn. Replaced the clutch assembly, and all is well.
|
Thanks for the offer to take me. :) My brother is on the way to take me there. Crappy day to go get it back. The car never sees rain. And it was the Clutch disc. The center broke right off the rest of it. I will get some pics of it if my guy did't chuck it.
Thanks again. |
