Found!- Switched 12V Spare Fuse in 987
 
Just reposting this as it was buried in another tread I started about radar detectors that some folks could care less about but this could be useful. After some voltmeter work I finally found a switched 12 V connection suitable for my radar detector. It's not a V1 or Escort that has the RJ-11 4w connection. I just needed a 2 wire 12V and ground connection for my BEL 985 Vector. Hot to the fuse slot, ground to a nearby chassis ground lug.

Fuse box ROW D, FUSE SLOT #4 is empty on my 987 and will provide 12V only when switched on by the key. This is shown as a blank in the little book so I imagine that regardless of the options on your car, this looks to always be a spare empty port that is only hot when the key is on.

Tom,

What year is your Boxster? Taking the cue from your post I wired my 12v Switched for my 12V Power Steering pump from D4 however when I am checking the same with the DVM I find that it is 12V Batt and not 12vSw since it is always 12V so far as the battery is connected. Bummer...

Any suggestions where else can I find 12V Sw in that vicinity?

tomk17, do you have a fuse on that hot leg somewhere between the stock fuse block and your detector? Are you worried about a short causing problems? Call me a worry wort. I had an electrical fire under my dash a long time ago and I am anal about fusing since.

Quick update:

I found 12v Sw right where I need it!

In the center console area there is a unused 4 pin connector, that I think is for the phone option. This connector has both 12vBatt and 12vSw. The RD/GRN wire is 12vBatt (continuous) and GRN/BLK is 12vSw (Switched). Checked it with the DVM, and confirmed.

Now I can just wire from right there....

Talking about the fuse, I can put an inline fuse from this to the junction block I created. Question is what size fuse should I use? The loads are:
  • PS pump from MR2 Spyder
  • Andromeda display for my EV (just a LCD display)
  • Homelink remote for garage door
  • May run the GAST vaccum pump from the same place for brakes...

I should probably find out the current consumption of the above and add them up and put a fuse at 150% or 200%...what do you guys think?

You can use those circuits for your display and Homelink remote, but the wires in that circuit are not suitable for the current you will need to run the power steering and vacuum pumps.

This an electric conversion correct? One way to easily get a high current supply for you pumps would be to re-purpose the radiator fan relays. The advantages are that you wouldn't need to run new circuits as you already have now unused, high current wires that are already run into the frunk, right where you would put the pumps (these are in connectors with the headlight wiring). You would need to do a little rewiring of the trigger circuitry, but that would be easy.

Yes this is for my EV conversion. Could you point me to more information on those relays and their location? At this time I am keeping the radiators just in case I need some cooling for my EV Controller and/or LiFePO4 batteries!

However I could connect to the 12V if it is switched. If you give me more info I can find and measure.

BTW, my EV display (Andromeda Display) came out really well in place of my CD storage and lower cubby...:)
