removing hood emblem
does anyone know how to remove the speed nuts? This is driving me crazy....
and how to install new emblem. I have a new emblem, nuts and gasket. thanks |
Hi,
IIRC, it's a 6mm nut, hand tighten. Use a small (1/4" drive) socket w/ extension or a nut driver. Lower the Hood almost parallel to the ground and try to extract the nut with the tool (the access hole is small and the nuts can slide out of reach inside the metal stamping). Installation is the reverse, keeping the Hood parallel to the ground, lay down the Gasket and Emblem inserting the pins into the Hood. The load up the nuts onto the tool like before and carefully insert them into the hole and onto the pin. Do both nuts and tighten slightly, then make sure the Emblem is straight before tightening them down. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! The nuts are made of thin brass and will bend and no longer grab the pin if overtightened. Hope this helps... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
It is called a pal nut. But I have always called it a speed nut.
Need an 8 mm socket. 1/4" drive so it can fit in the hole. If you use 3/8" drive then you need a deep socket. If your socket engages the nut but it just spins then report back. Or, I could sent Larry over.... |

It looks like "Larry" has poor depth preception. :) |
funny guy...
thanks Jim for the info. I'll give it a try and report back. |
Yes, it is an 8mm nut. Comes right off and new one screws right on. Just replaced mine with a silver emblem today.
