Hard-wired iPOD, but I have some noise....

I hard-wired my iPOD to the back of my CDR-220 today with the kit from discountcarstereo.com. It includes a power and ground wire to supply a charging voltage to the iPOD, as well as the speaker connections for the back of the head unit.

Once installed, the cable plugs into the bottom of the iPOD. It works great, too, but I can hear the iPOD through the stereo. You can hear the hard drive portion accessing data between songs pretty easily as a high-pitched squeal. It's not alternator noise, as it doesn't vary with RPMs. It's also no intolerably loud, but noticeable.

Any way to remove the noise? Sounds like the cable is just insufficiently shielded.

are u talking about the physical sound of the ipod?.. or does it go through your speakers. using a nano would solve it =)

I noticed the same thing when I connected the power to my iPod. I'm not sure what is causing it, but it's definately due to the power. There was no noise before connecting the power to the iPod.

I really don't notice it anymore, but if someone figures out what it is I'd be pretty happy to get rid of it.

i think that is called a ground loop.
basically wherever you grounded the power for the ipod is causing the noise because of the ground loop. i think you need to look for the proper ground. i am new to the porsche world and have no idea where to start looking.
i think you can google "ground loop" and there might be some solutions.

same problem:
I tried everything:
* getting power from the battery instead of the switched power
* inserting a noise reduction filter (goes between the CDR220 and the iPod)
* inserting a ground loop filter (goes between the power and ground)

All of that REDUCED the whining noise but nothing cured it.
Whoever will help me to get rid of that will be treated to a big beer by me....

I found a large ground point immediately behind the gauge cluster.

Simply press the hazard switch and it will pop out slightly. You can then use a thin screwdriver to pop the cover of the switch off by inserting it from the side (look for the notch). This exposes a torx bolt. Remove the bolt.

On the other end of the cluster is a small circular grill. Pop it off and it will reveal the second torx bolt that requires removal. Once removed, simply pull upwards on the entire cluster/hood and it will disengage the three pop clips retaining it. You don't need to disconnect the cluster.

Once out, imediately behind the cluster and above the steering column are two obvious ground points secured with 10mm bolts.

I haven't done this yet, but I've got an inline power filter on the way. I'll install it at the same time I correct the grounding issue.

sounds like alternator whine....very annoying. I got the same when I hardwired my Sirius using the Becker aux jack. had to go back to the cigarette plug.

I wanted to ask you a question about your Sirius install...

I currently use my Ipod in the Box. The cable connects to the headphone input and works great, no noise but no charging capability either.

I have Sirius in the house and on the Harley and I was thinking of putting it in the Box. You mentioned that you had alternator whine when using the Becker Aux connection. Are you now using the FM modulator for the unit rather than connecting directly to the radio ?

FM modlulators are horrible, almost as bad as those old casette-CD player car kits...
I got the alternator whine because it wasn't hard wired correctly,
not because it was using the rear aux jack. I simply unplugged the hardwiring and went back to the cigarette lighter. No more whine. The Becker jack was like only $25 if I recall...

But It's kind of messy in my car because I have a two prong cigarette lighter adapter that I picked up at Radio Shack for the V1 and Sirius. Those look terrible but I have no feedback or alternator whine. I'll have to take it in to an audio shop for a proper install.

It sounds like a grounding issue to me.
Try to run the ground to another location.
Or get rid of the power to the ipod completely and see
if it still makes the noise.
