i got a quick question,
i know that there are some open face helmets, but i got a full face helmet and it doesnt have a shield. do i really need one? do i need one to satisfy regulations on the track/autoX? or does it not matter?

No, you don't need the face shield on the Helmet to pass tech. If you're sitting behind a windshield, you don't need it anyway, it'll just make things unbearably hot...

yea i figured that, ill be looking arond for a shield.
btw, i cant seem to figure out what the model of the helmet is, so i cant really look for a shield.

It's a Bell Motorcycle Helmet, either the Star 1 or Star 2 (Discontinued). You can probably still find a visor for it though - figure about $30. If not, contact Bell directly.

You might have trouble with Tech though - the Bell Star Helmet is only M1995 rated and your Auto-X will probably require SA2000 or SA2005 rating...

Well, the Star 2 is discontinued and the Star 1, while still available is an M1995 (though it may have been re-rated), but it would still have only an 'M' rating.

If you're sure it's SA200 (on the Helmet, not the Box), then it's not the Star 1 - they only carry 'M' and DOT ratings (Motorcycle Helmets), though it certainly looks like one.

It could be an older version of the Bell Sprint, or Multi Sprint Street Racing Helmet, but the current one is SA2005 rated, not SA2000...

the pic i posted w the rating is a picture of the back of the helmet, not the box.
inside the helmet is has 'vehicle helmet instructions'...like telling you to make sure straps are on and whatnot....

i just emailed Bell with pictures and ill have them hopefully identify it and give me more info on the shield

FWIW - The Chicago PCA requires either a M or SA rated helmet for autocrosses. For DE they require a SA rated helmet.

i just got the chicago scene today, and i was looking trough it, and it says that you will need a sa 2000 rating helmet to attend a autoX on the 6th of May, the one that i will be attending...

Check out page 41 of the March edition (you can see it on the website) and let me know if you read it the same way I do. :)

i jsut read it on page 31 that it says snell 2000 and assumed, o well, either way im covered for auto x and track event :)

In your case, the use of a shield may become a personal preference. I don't use a shield (don't like them) but I have suffered from occasionally getting dirt in my eyes at speed (track events). If you find that this becomes an issue, by all means install a shield.

Looks like you may have to mod the helmet. On the sides, it has that black circle with BELL written in it. Looks like a hard piece of plastic. That is usually where the shield mounts to the helmet. On the other hand, it does look like there is a small felt strip along the outside of the face opening, which is usually there to allow a soft fit for the shield.

i doubt i clear the broomstick rule, and ill be always tracking/autoX'ing the car w a hardtop, and probably closed windows, so its really not a big deal.
i dont plan to spend hours in the car at times so i will give it a shot at my first event, and see how it goes from there

Almost all clubs require Drivers window down (for safety AND to give signals -ie passing, pitting etc - to others).. so, expect something to come into the cabin ;)

Those are just caps which live in the socket that the Faceshield hingepins fit into. It just pops out...

I always run with my face shield in the up position. It isn't bad until you spin the car and rubber and dirt covers the entire inside of your car including your face (voice of experience). :D

Whether there is any truth to it or not, I try to run with the top down as the body goes through a lot of twisting and I don't want to bend the frame of the convertible top. Once again, I don't know if there is any truth to this... besides, its more fun to run with the top down. :)
