Um, how much is a new engine?!!
 

I had heard some numbers tossed around in this forum, but I was just looking at crate motors online and saw that (at least at this site), a 2.7 for an ’05 987 goes for $21k! I am assuming that does not include shipping or installation. :eek:

That is significantly more than I thought it would cost to swap out my engine. Granted, I am looking to get several more years of driving out of this car before this needs to be done, but is this really the cost I am looking at in another 5 years if I keep this car (I put a lot of miles on my car)? For some reason, I had it in my head that I could drop a 3.2 in there and drive out at only around $15k including labor, tax and everything.

I have found places that do a 3.8l swap for $27k. On a 987.

When its time to swap your engine, I can guarantee you will find good, low mileage salvage 3.2 engines with the wiring harnesses and ECU for the range you're talking about.

Not brand new though... Porsche is very proud of their engines. I have no idea why with all the RMS and intermediate shaft failures they have!

I think those prices are for brand new motors w/o using your old one for a core. I seem to recall reading somewhere (tho it may just be wishful thinking) that getting a remanufactured crate motor from Porsche and turning in your old engine for a core was much cheaper. Of course that means you are stuck with the same displacement as your old engine if you did it that way.

I agree with Randall you can always find a good low-mileage engine out of a salvaged car for much less. That is what I did when I had my 3.4 conversion done.
