did find something interesting today when i scrolled to the bottom of the pelican engine swap page - there is a mercedes fuel filter that has a built-in fuel pressure regulator with a return. so, if you put a later engine with returnless fuel rails in your early car (or, in your case, i presume the intake from a later car on an early engine?) install the mercedes unit in the place of your current fuel filter (fittings look the same) and terminate the return line at the filter instead of running it to the engine. would require you to run vacuum to the fpr, however.
