WTB: Broken gauge cluster MY99
Looking for a cluster so that I can fix mine. I'm hoping to find a broken one on the cheap since I only need the one LCD.
This is the style of cluster that I'm looking for and as long as the oil level/clock LCD is not broken, I don't care about the condition of the rest of it.
Tiptronic or manual will work, as long as it is the style pictured above and not the style with the large dot matrix display.
Broken LCD that I'm looking to replace.

I've been through this myself when I was upgrading to a Carrera Cluster. The defect on my lcd looks almost identical to yours. I'm seen similar defects on other clusters which leads me to believe this is caused by a quality control lapse.
Swapping the lcd is tricky. Here's a good thread concerning the replacement of the lcd:
Instrument Cluster Compatability - 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa) - RennTech.org Forums
(Post # 11 is most helpful.)
If you decide to swap out the cluster with one from either another Boxster or a Carrera, I have the instructions for reprogramming it. Just send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send the instructions to you.
Good luck.

Pretty sure I have a couple of gauge clusters with good lcd panels. Drop me a pm if you are still looking.

I was unable to find anyone who was willing to solder an lcd on my cluster. I contacted Palo Alto Speedometer, North Hollywood Speedometer and a local shop here in Richmond (Southern Electronics) that said that all said they worked on VDO clusters. None of them wanted to touch it. However, based on that post on Renntech, it can be done.
Fortunately a board member helped me out and showed me how to reprogram the cluster. You can read about my challenges here: http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/43017-carrera-gauge-swap.html
Personally, I have really enjoyed having the Carrera cluster in my car. If you can find a good cluster at a good price, the additional cost is not that high. I was really lucky since I was able to sell the silver gauges from my Boxster for about the same price I paid for my Carrera gauges.
Anyway, whatever you decide good luck.

I have these, which I think are the earlier non-dot matrix ones.

Yeah, those are the slightly newer style which I don't have. Mine looks like the pic below. Thanks, though!
