"Just for Fun" rear deck lid...

i like it in concept and have considered the same myself. in execution it looks a bit 'busy' what with all the shut lines, third brake light, etc. might actually be practical if you ever put an intercooler in the trunk. i've also often thought about making a 1-piece rear deck lid for the 986 that looks like the 987 spyder lid; if you could get it to wrap down at the front and seal against the engine bulkhead then you could actually remove the engine cover and vent the engine through a set of those like on the original 550.

Wasn't sure between some kind of super-subwoofer grilles or mobile hibachi grills (BBQ). Hard to say what it is... in all honesty. So what is this for exactly?

Good Grief - tough group.

Radium - you got the message - It "could" be practical. I also thought about routing some ducting from the trunk firewall up into the vents with flex hose.... the top side of the engine gets really hot.

Madmods - at this "prototype" stage (no, I'm not producing these), it's framework is made of oak - contoured to reinforce the trunk lid and retain the plywood pan. It can most definately be made waterproof with a thin sheetmetal pan (even modify a deep dish cookie sheet and then route drain lines along the lid itself into drilled holes just past the rubber deck lid gasket into the cavity for the pop up spoiler.

This project was just a challenge waiting for an answer - with lots of possibilities.... paint the grilles to match... leave them in the original silver aluminum... anyway, thought I'd share with y'all.

I like the "retro" look. I don't like the idea of opening up the trunk for no beneficial reason.

while i like the general concept, i don't think they look they belong on the car simply because the grill slats are too close...they don't match the look of any of the other intake grills on the car.

Well..... for me, the intent was to 'borrow' from the old and apply to the new. While proportions and aesthetics can be debated, I wanted to link the original concept of the 550 through 356C to the new design.

.... we might have solar panels sooner than we think, BlueStar.... clever analysis.

I like them and thought about doing something like that but would not want to cut into the rear deck lid. Maybe something that fits on top of the deck lid faux venting? where did you get the grilles? are they actually 356 grills?
