May I recommend a product?

Absolutely fantastic.

Does it work on.......

very heavily coated, old brake dust? I have tried Maquiars all wheel cleaner, Car-Pro Iron-X and P21S gel. All to a good job of removing light or new brake dust. My rims seem to have old dust "baked" into them. I have tried adding light mild abrasive scrubbing as well. Gets them to about 85% of the result I want.

Try SONAX.
Couple years ago I seriously thought the wheels would need resurfacing, powder coating. They looked that bad. Scrubbing them was little help.
Sprayed on SONAX, available Amazon etc...
Spray it on, watch it change color from green to red, 3-5 minutes, spray off w/high pressure water at coin operated car wash.
They came out looking like new, and I have spoke type wheels.

Been using sonax for quite a while and it is a great product. I try to take the wheels off about every 15,00 miles ( which comes pretty quick for me ) and inspect the brakes, tires, etc and give the wheels a good cleaning with sonax and then a couple of good applications of wax.

I swear by P21S...

grc0456 11-01-2015 04:06 AM

Well, what's one more product to try......

...in the search for perfection?!?

Here's what mine look like:

What I'm talking about.
After repeated scrubbing w/various products still that had that type niggling trace, which is why I thought it needed resurfacing or repainting.
Sonax removed it.
Problem solved.

Ok, thanks! I'll gave Sonax a try. BTW, I just went out and gave the trouble spots a mild wipe with Maquiars compound. Seems to work pretty well. When I have time I may go back more thorougly.

Griot's Garage heavy duty wheel cleaner is the bomb!. It also smells good
Tried P21 and sonax and prefer Griot's Garage

Just wax your wheels and very little dust will adhere and what does will come off with water.

Yep, but no sense waxing them until they are cleaned up to my satisfaction. Some wouldn't care, and my car is 12 years old and hardly ready for a concours - but clean, sharp wheels make any vehicle, no?

The slicker a surface is the less sticks to it. I use old clay bar for tough wheel stains. Then wax.

Thanks for all the suggestions! And Timco, I didn't intend to hijack the thread. BTW, your wheels and calipers look awesome. And your Anniversary edition in GT Silver metallic with cocoa interior is one of my favorite color combos of all 986's. Just a beautiful Box!

joecal 11-01-2015 08:18 AM

I'll have to try that, I've used Eagle One wheel products before with great results.

peterbrown77 11-01-2015 08:42 AM

I used the Hot Wheels wheel cleaner for about a year and it peeled the clear coat off my red Boxster S calipers...

Never again.

One thing I did do was take off the wheels and clean off all the brake dust from the rim and back of the spokes with a power washer and then applied 3 or 4 coats of Armor All Wheel Protectant. It did make the brake dust easier to remove....

It's a topic more than a thread. I have some products to try myself!

I've had great results from Sonax wheel cleaner plus, especially when applied to dry wheels. I only use it in really bad wheels, though, because of how expensive it is. To maintain already clean wheels, I like to keep a layer of sealant on them and wash thoroughly and frequently with car wash shampoo. I use an EZ-detail style wheel brush to clean inside the barrels and behind the spokes. I use a 1" round pastry brush to clean the lug nut holes. I'm experimenting with using spray-on quick wax after the routine cleaning, to keep a good sealant going on them.

JayG 11-01-2015 10:03 AM

after you get them clean, apply rejex. it is a polymer coating that makes it easy to keep clean

Wax does not last very long, especially if you track the car and the wheels get really hot

If you can get a great product over the counter I consider that a plus over a boutique brand that requires you pay shipping or requires you place a larger order to get free shipping.

Haha......"in search of perfection" was a tad tongue in cheek. I'll not be entering any concourse events soon. I just want fairly clean wheels. And I'll not be spending a few hundred dollars on new center caps!

Although I did spend $17 on black valve stem covers with colored crests! And one of the crests fell off on the first day (not good, Suncoast).

grc0456 11-02-2015 01:38 AM

Got mine...............

Through Autogeek.net. Not sure you can run out anywhere for P21S

Winner! For me, Griot's garage is the best I've tried. Took off most of the baked on brake dust with just a spray on and agitation with a bristled wheel brush and rinse off. For some of the really tough spots in the crevasses, some medium scrubbing with a non-abrasive pad was all it needed.

I just received my Griot's Garage and was so anxious to try it I went out and used it in the dark, so no pics yet. Maybe on the weekend - when I can apply a coat of Rejex, too.

Thanks for the recommendation, Jay!

This is the Purple cleaner from Orchard Supply at full strength, with a little detailing in the corners. I need a brush for the lug nuts, and will be happy.

I like the idea of the wax on the rims, I think that will help the weekly upkeep. What kind do you recommend?

grc0456 11-10-2015 06:23 AM

I think any wax would work to provide a non-adhesive barrier after you get the wheels clean, but I'm going to try Rejex. Its a sealant, and I understand a lot of the track guys use it with success (I shudder at the amount of brake dust they generate).

If you are looking at a wax specifically for wheels, maybe, otherwise the heat will break it down quickly
check out rejex, it lasts 3-6 months
