My 2000 Boxster S blew a gasket or something...
Last weekend we (10 Porsches) were driving through the German Eifel (near the Nürburgring) and we were planning to have a nice trip on those nice curvy German roads. We started in Prüm and drove through the hills, passed some nice villages and had lots of fun until:
http://vid1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee472/Black-Betty/Black%20Jack/VID-20160604-WA0001.mp4 (the Boxster that drives in front of the 997 that is filming this, is mine :( ) There was no warning whatsoever that this was going to happen; it just did! I lost all drive and all the lights in my dashboard came on; my dashboard looked like a X-mas tree... It looked as if the car was going to catch fire, but luckily it didn't. http://vid1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee472/Black-Betty/Black%20Jack/VID-20160604-WA0000.mp4 (check out my very quick assessment at the end: that can only be concluded by a trained eye ;)) preliminary assessment: catastrophical blow out of the AOS... Car doesn't start and will be transported from Germany to the Netherlands next week. |
That's no fun. If its like mine, it won't start because one of your cylinders is full of oil.
Good luck! |
So how is/was yours repaired?

Hi,
if it was the AOS, there was a similar case lately: http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/61427-2003-boxster-engine-blew-up.html Regards from Germany Markus |
HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!
The engine has died... At least it went with a bang... a BIG bang... Well, here it is: One of the pistons is non-existent and has completely desintrigated: http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...r/DSC_0179.jpg http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...r/DSC_0180.jpg Here's what's left of it (including the remains of the connecting rod) http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...r/DSC_0182.jpg The case has some serious damage and is cracked: http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...r/DSC_0187.jpg http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...r/DSC_0188.jpg    So that's non-reparable... |
I was literally startled when I scrolled down and reached that first picture. Very sorry to hear.

Ooooh, Carnage...
Man, that makes me cringe.
I hope you find a replacement engine without too much trouble and can get back on the road ASAP. |
Hello Black Jack,
very sorry for you and your engine. I think in that case there is no other way than to look for a replacement engine. Please also make shure to clean all water hoses, radiators etc. as good as you can. Best would be to replace all that stuff, because engine oil in water isn't good for rubber hoses and if you have some parts in the radiators that can ruin the new engine. So 2 options: excessive cleaning or replacing. Cleaning is less expensive but takes a lot of time to do and sometimes it doesn't work. Regards, Markus |
I used the Brexit to my advantage and bought a replacement block in the UK. It turns out it is cheaper to buy salvage parts in the UK than in the Netherlands, Germany or Belgium.
It has probably something to do that UK cars are worth much less in the rest of Europe because their steering wheel is on the wrong/right side ;) . The 'market' for RHD cars is much smaller than LHD cars and that makes the cars (and also the parts) a lot cheaper... Now the £ has dropped considerably compared to the it became even more interesting to buy an engine in the UK. The replacement engine arrived today. I'm going to clean as much as possible, but some things I will replace (AOS). Hopefully I will be driving the Boxster again in August! I'll keep you posted. |

Let the rebuild begin! Although it will probably start after my holidays... Hopefully the car will be up and running again in September... |
