iPod / XM / Changer Solution in my 986
I posted about this install already elsewhere, but I thought I'd share some original pics. I integrated my iPod and XM receiver using a Soundgate Aux3 Switch and a spec.dock from 2point5, LLC in Atlanta. It's a great direct connect solution that allows you to keep your CD changer (I have a Becker CDR 220). The Aux3 comes with a 3-way switch that I installed to the left of the head unit - 1 for iPod, 1 for CD changer and 1 for XM. It's not the cheapest way to go, but if you buy the different components online and do the install yourself, you can save a lot of money (I had Al & Ed's do the install for $200).
Notice the switch to the left of the head unit: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...as/Switch3.jpg Here's the spec.dock, which is an iPod dock that replaces the ashtray: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...as/Switch2.jpg Here's a shot of all of it: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...as/Switch1.jpg -DC |

WHAT ABOUT THOSE SHOES  |
Hey, I wear blue suits and black shoes EVERYDAY. You gotta mix it up every now and then to stay sane...
Good thing you guys can't see my pink shirt... |
Nice setup dcallas. I have one question, how did you wire the power from the set up to your car so you can charge your iPod? I have the ability to charge my iPod but I haven't connected the power wire or ground because I'm not sure where to tap the juice.
|
I had it professionally installed, so I'm not sure from where he tapped the power supply. I do know the ashtray has a small light, so there's power running to that area before any mods are made - not sure if that's what he used or not.

you dont think that looks outta place?
y not just mold it where the CD holder thing is? |
Not personally, no. To each his own, of course. What I think looks out of place is anything connected to the cigarette lighter or mounted off to the side (I hate the way my XM is mounted) or anything with wires showing. This, to me, is ideal, because it replaces something I wouldn't use otherwise, hides all of the wires and can be stowed away/closed when not in use. Plus, I regularly use the storage box above the the A/C controls for my wallet, etc, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. Works for me!

as long as you like it man, thats all that matters.
i just like when things appear to be factory even thought they are not, thats y i asked if you think they look outta place. |
I am in the process of trying to figure out where I am going to put my XM reciever. I have the same one you have and their really is no place for it. I was thinking about removing the stupid 4 disk holder that takes up precious space and mounting the unit directly to the dash. The only problem is that it is dangerously close to my shifter. Then, I thought about putting it on top of the dash on the right side, but there is so little room in this car.
I agree, I hate wires everywhere. I am just going to have to suck it up and get it professionally installed. I enjoy doing it myself, but it has to look good on a Porsche. |
I ran the antenna wire myself, but do not want to try to hard wire it in the dash. So I am stuck using the cord for now. I did however put velcro up ontop of the worthless "CD Shelf Center Console".
It does not stay up sometimes, so I am going to try and reinforce the Velcro....it may look a little rigged but I dont care about the CD holder. |
This how I mounted my XM reciever. I used velcro and a strong adhesive to hold it up. It looks good, I am not going to hard-wire it because if there was a electrical problem, my warrenty would be voided.

Looks great ! I can't believe you did that with just velcro...
Doesn't it interfere with shifting ? ( Oops, I just saw in your sig that you have a tip :o ) Nick |

I powered mine by stealing power from the back of the head unit (this meant that I didn't need a ground loop isolator because the ground for everything was with the head unit). You can also grab power/ground from the cigarette lighter (constant on) or there is also a small connector behind the console on the drivers side that is used for a phone install. You can get power and ground from this.
