Cool. I know you'll post pics when done. Love viewing them!

Also, I missed your earlier posts of your cleaning project. Impressive results. I've been a clay man for years, even on my DD's. It's always amazing how much contaminant comes off of a "clean" car.

Speaking of, I attended a PCA detailing clinic today held at a high-end detailing shop. I learned a few things, and loved looking at the cars in their shop.

...and as at any PCA event, I enjoy seeing the cars in the parking lot as well!

...and even better, when I got I home my wife's cousin stopped by for a visit and brought his '08 Cayman from out of hibernation. It was a good day!

My pre-facelift headlights arrived.

Annoyingly, one of the adjusters has snapped. Luckily it's not the side that already has a snapped adjuster, so I can still pass an MOT.

See the crack at the bottom of that plastic bit? Would this be repairable? I'm hoping that the headlight assembly rests on it, while it pushes it up and down, so it wouldn't make a difference if it's cracked. But if not, I'm wondering how I can fix it. Some sort of plastic resin?

Soooooooooooo cleannnnnn!! hooot dammmnnn!!

A bird shat on it today, and because of the protector it bounced and scattered hahaha!

JB Weld is the usual go to isn't it?

geraintthomas 03-24-2016 08:17 AM

I was just thinking actually. If the bit that it's snapped off pushes this bit upwards to raise the bulb, and releases it to lower, then it might not even need gluing back together.

If the weight of the lamp assembly is resting on it, then when it gets adjusted, it'll push it backwards or lower it, regardless if it's permanently fixed to it.

It's not ideal, but I'll put it in the car and will give it a try. If it works, I won't mess with it.

jakeru 03-24-2016 05:46 PM

If its ABS plastic, abs plumbing solvent-weld will work great. (I've repaired some broken plastic bits that way with very good results.)

http://www.oatey.com/img/product/30902.jpg

Often the plastic will be molded with an identifier... Look for "ABS".

geraintthomas 04-06-2016 06:32 AM

My MOT is due tomorrow, so I gave the car a check over.

The only concerning things is the horizontal adjuster for the front right lamp which is snapped, but I have a spare pre-facelift headlight that's perfect, so I'll just have to put that on and have an odd headlight just to pass the MOT. I'll fix it soon.

The other thing is a split driveshaft boot which is an MOT fail, so that'll need changing.

Checked all the lights and all are working apart from a numberplate bulb. One of the Cree ones I put in. I took it out, looked at it, put it back in and it started to work again, but as I was holding the bulb assembly in my hand, it literally exploded and burst into flames.

http://i.imgur.com/Yf2daaHl.jpg

Burnt my fingers a little, but not much. Couldn't believe it! I've just replaced them so it passes the MOT. Must have been a faulty unit.

Aside from that, not much else has happened. Drove one of the new twin turbo charged Carrera S 991's and my god it's fast. You really can't tell it's turbo charged for 95% of the time, unless you REALLY look for it.

Yes, it is crucial to both the position of the headlight beam and adjusting the position.
No, you cannot glue or plastic weld it as just on the other side of the cup is the ball and socket joint. If you get any glue or anything in that joint or even against the other mating face, you will not be able to adjust it. The best thing to do would be to replace it with a good one from one of your other headlights. You can do it without opening the headlight up, but it's not that easy. The hardest part is getting the ball out of the ball and socket joint (the part that has snapped off).

geraintthomas 04-07-2016 02:33 AM

As long as it's possible then I'll give it a try.

Bad news, the car's failed the MOT but only on brake discs. The inside of all 4 discs are corroded. So that's 4 new discs and a set of new pads for me :(

That's all though luckily. At least it's only failed on things that wear overtime as opposed to something going wrong.

particlewave 04-07-2016 03:11 AM

I'll see if I can get you some pics and maybe a quick video showing what you're dealing with (from the inside) and how to get the old ball out of the socket using a tool you can easily make out of a nail.

I've done it a few times, haha :D

geraintthomas 04-07-2016 05:14 AM

You would be an absolute star if you could do that for me :) thanks a bunch buddy, really appreciate it.

I've managed to source brand new Pagid discs and pads for £300. EuroCarParts did them for me at a deal, as opposed to £380. The garage has charged me £50, and instead of them doing the labour, they said "If you want to take it home, change them yourself and bring it back in, we won't charge you for the re-test".

Good guys, so it's not all bad. He said the rest of the car is perfect, it's just the discs.

geraintthomas 04-07-2016 12:15 PM

The garage weren't wrong. Look at the state of them:

http://i.imgur.com/Y2qEoCTl.jpg

Nice and new, cleaned everything too:

http://i.imgur.com/iFQNzscl.jpg

£300 for new discs and pads front and back is actually really good.

One down, I'll do the other three on the weekend. Very easy job though, I'm surprised. No seized or rusty bolts, no problems pushing the pistons back in either. I pushed them in by hand by using the old pads. From my experience I've always had to use a g-clamp to put pistons back in!

I suppose you get what you pay for :)

particlewave 04-07-2016 09:12 PM

This "tool" is not my best work, but I needed something in a pinch and it worked great. I've used it several times since...easy to make and does the job. ;)

...didn't you buy this recently......surely the garage you bought it from offered a year's MOT...I think you bought it from Speeds..?

jcslocum 04-08-2016 03:59 AM

How can that be an MOT failure?? That rust is 100% normal on a stock steel rotor. Thickness is what they should be worried about not rust.....

I knocked them down a huge amount on price by having them to not give me a years MOT. Even with this, I'm still in pocket from the amount I knocked them down.

The rears failed on thickness, the fronts failed on condition - I've yet to take a photo of the fronts, the insides of them are shocking, they look like the face has completely rotted away.

geraintthomas 04-09-2016 10:15 AM

Annoyingly I just tried to fit the front pads and they don't fit. The shop gave me two sets of rear pads, and when I called to explain, they told me the fronts would cost me more, even though they made a deal with me for front and back discs and pads. I'm off there to see the manager tomorrow as I definitely won't be paying extra for a mistake they made ;)

Even if I had to it's fine, I just want the car back on the road.

The inner O/S driveshaft boot has split. I don't know how the MOT garage missed that but it's practically in half. Is there much maintenance in replacing these?

geraintthomas 04-11-2016 12:22 AM

Took it back in for a retest, passed no advisories :) the brakes are outstanding, and I thought they were good before!

geraintthomas 04-16-2016 02:16 PM

Coolant has been perfect so far, so looks like it was the cap. Happy days!

Prepped the car for a drive to Silverstone Circuit tomorrow as the 6 hours of LeMans Seies is there. Can't wait!

geraintthomas 04-17-2016 02:17 PM

Back from Silverstone to see the 6 hours WEC race. What a day as usual :) Porsche were very competitive, shame about the crash between #1 Porsche and #86 Porsche.

Had a stroll through the Porsche Club GB area of the old track where hundreds of Porsches were parked. You're allowed to park there if you're part of the club. While I'd love to be, I can't justify the £70 annual fee just to be part of it.

The Boxster S was outstanding. Over 3 hours there and 3 hours back, over 300 miles in total. We did the whole trip on around £55 of fuel, which was incredible. Drove economically but cruised at 75mpg. Outstanding! Car ran flawlessly, we had the roof down there and back, and the weather was stunning. I pulled up outside my house after dropping my dad back to his, got out of the car, locked the door and felt very proud of it. I know it's not an enormous journey but it's the first one I've had with it and it's been brilliant. Looked the part too parked up along side other exotica. Apart from a few GT3 RS's, Cayman GT4's and the odd 488 GTB that stole the show in some instances.

An amazing day :) added to my to-do list is a machine polisher, a private number plate and a front end re-spray. There's nowt wrong with my paint, but I want it 'perfect'. Seeing the other Porsches today had made me realise what a difference a good front end (in terms of paint) makes.

Thanks a load for recording that mate, appreciate it!

But could it be done without dismantling the headlight? The spare ones I've bought are going to be opened, but my originals aren't as that's why I bought spares. If I'm taking this part off the originals and using it in my new spares, could I take it out without dismantling it?

Thanks!

geraintthomas 04-19-2016 12:37 AM

And the long awaited photo of the inside of the front discs:

Can't believe I didn't see this before.

That was showing how to remove the ball without disassembly. I just used a disassembled headlight to make things clearer. ;)

geraintthomas 04-19-2016 01:15 AM

Spot on, thought as much :) Thanks!

njbray 04-19-2016 08:35 AM

Holy s--t! What the hell happened to that brake disc?
It looks like the car was parked in the sea! I have forgotten how British weather and roads beat up cars!
Off to check the inside of my discs!:)

geraintthomas 04-19-2016 03:10 PM

I was horribly shocked to see them like this too :/

geraintthomas 05-01-2016 02:05 PM

Got some wheel nut covers:

After:
http://i.imgur.com/Wdov2hYl.jpg

I also ordered some caliper decals to replace the faded ones on the calipers, but had quite a lot spare.

I decided to place one of the larger ones on the wind deflector (sorry for the average photos):

http://i.imgur.com/bgcfopBl.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/MwXHnx5l.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/XftR2R5l.jpg

And now onto the caliper. Here's one of the faded ones:

http://i.imgur.com/JilUmF9l.jpg

Removed the remains using Meguiars Ultimate Compound and a soft foam applicator:

http://i.imgur.com/JyGwasLl.jpg

Applied the decal:

And finished:

http://i.imgur.com/IOjBV0zl.jpg

Far better.

geraintthomas 05-01-2016 02:11 PM

And seeing as I had a few more spare, I uhh... decided to go one step further.

The door sill in the passenger side has an umbrella well for a small umbrella, which I've already got in there. Seeing as I refuse to pay £80 for an original Porsche umbrella, and seeing as I had some decals left over... you can see where this is going.

Clever use of the decals, Ger. Where did you get those lug nut covers? My lugs look awful, but the thought of removing the wheels and painting them leaves me less than ambitious.

Thanks bud.

I'm in the UK so I'm on the UK ebay, but I bought these:

19mm SILVER ALLOY WHEEL NUT BOLT COVERS CAPS UNIVERSAL SET WITH TOOLS | eBay

As long as they're 19mm you'll be fine. For the locking nut, put a little bit of tape inside to make a more snug fit. With the others they should push right on nice and tight.

TrumpyAl 05-02-2016 05:48 AM

More great tinkers.

grc0456 05-02-2016 07:57 AM

Ordered up the lug nut covers, caliper paint kit and decals.

You may want to use some VHT caliper clear coat on your calipers. Otherwise, I don't think the decals will last long.
