2001 986S Wide Body
 

I just couldn't wait until it is finished....here's a picture of my wide bodied 986s just before being painted. I widened the rear quarters by 1 1/2" and added GT2 style side skirts. It looks amazing!

Now I am looking for a GT2 style front bumper and some wider rear rims!

Color is going to be 1978 Porsche Crystal Green Metallic. I'll post more pictures after it is painted.

How did you widen it? You have any pics of that process?

I did take a couple of photos during the process but cannot find them :confused:

Basically, I took a zip disk and cut the 1/4 panel from front to back, around the tail lights, cut the inner fender in the same way. lastly I cut it at the curving body line around the door. I pull it all outward about 1 1/2" and fill in the gap with welded in pieces of flat bar (1 1/2" x .0625"). After a million little spot welds, I topped everything off with some fiberglass filler and smoothed it all out.

Here's some pictures after paint. The wideness of the body from the doors back is just enough that it looks stock, nothing to crazy. Hopefully you can make it out better in these pictures now that there is some color on it. Notice to I had to slice and plastic weld the rear bumper to fit the wider body.

I am seriously considering designing my own all aluminum "targa" top. Kinda like a zientop with t-roofs. Might be cool, or a disaster, won't know till I try it!http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1448509132.jpg

Looks good. Will 996 wheels fit the rear now?

Thank you, I am hoping so, I haven't addressed the wheels yet. I have about 1.75" distance between the wheel well lip and the tire, so I can fit something nice and wide in there. I probably will look for something nice in the aftermarket, BBS, etc.

Subtle but nice! Now you need to fill up those rear fenders with some huge rim/tires!

looks very targa-ish. I think you could accomplish the same with a modified cayman hatch (there is actually a guy in PQ making CF cayman hatches on ebay). install some 987 windows, an alu hoop, a canvas top and some lexan quarter windows and done.

Thank you and YES, I am going to stuff the widest, biggest rims I can fit in there. won't do much until spring now. Just going into hibernation for the Canadian winter :(

While I generally am not a big fan of body kits or mods, what you did looks cool

Thanks Jay, my goal was to keep it looking like an OEM car. I'm not a fan of huge goddy kits either,

Here's another pic showing my car and some of my little machine shop set up. It was nice enough the other day to actually have the garage door open while I work :)
