Transitioning from a 986 to a 981
 

Here is my trip report of moving from a 2001S to a 2013 S after 7 years of ownership. I have enjoyed my time here over the years. Bob

Nice story man! I just bought 986 so not very clever for me to read that praise from newer model.. Damn! :D

You note I did not compare them (different generations)...the 986 is a classic and a great car... had I had a reason to keep it and have two.... no... I could think of no reasonable excuse... :)

Excellent write up! I myself will be buying a 981 in the next year. I am going to keep my 986. I have driven a lot of phenomenal cars, and the 986 really is something special. Last year I had the chance to track a Ferrari F430, a C7 stingray, Audi R8 V10, and a Lamborghini Gallardo at Hallet in Jennings Oklahoma. Next month I am going back to track a Mclaren MP4 and the new Porsche GT3. Even after all of that, the 986 is a pure, raw, drivers car. Love it! But I might change my mind on the 981 if the GT3 is everything they say it is. ;)

Have you looked into the gt4

I wouldn't be surprised if they are not already on a 2 year waiting list.

Excellent story Bob! I know at some point, I will most likely travel down the same path, God willing. I love my 2001 S for the same reasons. The lines, performance and reliability. But I also know that time marches on as does technology which is good and bad. I love the lines of the 981 and I think it is another fantastic car by Porsche. I'm just not ready to give up my 986, yet. Your story though, makes me think. When the time does come, I think I would have to do a private sale, just to make sure it goes to a good home. I feel much the same way and have purposely not driven a 981 cause I know I will lust after one. Motobob's write up makes it tempting to cash out some investments and buy now. Fortunately the only Porsche dealer in the Phoenix area is across town but that is soon changing with one opening this year just 4 miles from the house. :) Two and a half years of college tuition left for my daughter. At that point I should be approaching 90k on mine and it will be time for either a GTS or GT4. I used to lust after another 911 but once you go mid-engined it's hard to go back and with the power levels in the 981 very similar and 991 having become more of a GT then a sports car it the 981 that I want.

Agree....yes I really wish I could have sold it to a private owner; one regret. When I was given a fair price for my 986 it was just too easy to drive it down, sign the title over and pick up the new car. Bob

Ventilated seats. Nice option. I'm so looking forward to PDK and ventilated seats in my next Pcar.

These two things make a Porsche a fun car to own in Houston, Texas.

Call me nuts, but I prefer the roundiness and smooth lines of the 986. When I see the 981, I'm immediately reminded of my daughter's old Eclipse convertible. Don't get me wrong, it's a great-looking car and I'd do backflips to own one. But it's not quite as unique as the first gen Boxsters.

I am also thinking of making a change but I am going to keep my base 986 and instead get a newer Cayman S. My 986 is my first ever P car fulfilling a dream I had as a kid to own a Porsche. I can't bring myself to let it go.

I can't bring myself to let my Boxster go due to the fact I've dumped $40k into a $7,500 car! :0

LOL I have put more in mine than its worth as well but the feeling I get when I drive is worth every penny.

My "new" one continues to sleep in the garage while this last gasp of winter weather for VA pummels us... I should be able to get it out and drive it soon! Bob
