The Illinois Secretary of State website has a pick-a-plate feature where you can input a vanity plate choice and see if it is taken. I put in a few options, like WMWMWMW because I thought it would be good to have something that is more like a random pattern or a visual joke than any word. Also, it is impossible to really read from any distance or at any speed. I have seen something like it before, though I don't remember from what state. I thought maybe the car belonged to a cardiologist who reads echocardiograms because that's what it looked like. The pick-a plate generator told me my different W and M pattern choices were available, but after they got the request, the Secretary of State's office called me up and said the requests had to be denied, because this kind of a combination is "confusing to law enforcement". I certainly couldn't argue with that, since that was partly my point.

Wracked my brains for an alternative vanity plate, but couldn't come up with anything suitable, and instead asked to have the vanity plate fee refunded.
One of my all time favorites was a red 911 with the plates RED CAR. Nice and understated. GREY CAR was available here, but mine is silver. Thought about going with a seize-the-day message in Latin, "Ante Mortem" ("Before Death") as it expresses my feelings, but I'm not driving around in professor mode with a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches and a pipe.

Meanwhile, I still have to drive the minivan once in a while. Had to pick up two 4'x8' sheets of marine grade plywood for a project today, and couldn't quite figure how to do that with the Boxster. When my wife and I had kids and got that Odyssey and gave up the sporty cars, we felt like we had caved.
