Painted Lugs
 

I saw this posted recently but couldn't find the thread. I gave it a go with VHT caliper paint (silver) I had left over from doing my Benz a couple years ago. Works great! Dries in minutes and doesn't chip. This was on my very low mileage 2007 987. The only thing on it that had aged was the lugs...check out the before and after, really came out nice.

Do you use a chemical wheel cleaner? I think that causes some of the corrosion.

Jäger - Thanks. I actually don't use the chemical cleaners, I find once a used car wheel is cleaned completely after purchase they really don't help much. I've only had the car for 5 weeks and it had 7k miles on it when I got it so I'm not sure what the previous guy did. I think he had someone clean it though.
This is a really easy thing to do and really improves the look of the wheels. Thanks for the idea!

I was just ready to purchase new lugs, now a can of VHT will do the trick. Thank you Porsche brothers!

Post before and after for us! Make sure you use VHT though, it dries faster and has the best fine spray. :cheers:

Ok. I don't have as much confidence in caliper paint anymore. I just did my calipers in what looks almost like French blue (very awesome), but it started chipping even as I was lightly scraping a little overpaint off of the caliper after tape removal. I used the dupli-color brand and followed all instructions to a t.

Whip, have u put a socket to the lugs yet, and have u seen any chip/wear?

FYI, I did use G2 caliper paint with huge success in the past on a semi track car that would have wheels removed and calipers knocked on at least 6-10 times per year---->and no damage to caliper paint whatsoever.

I don't use Dupli-Color...VHT only! It goes on better, dries faster, and colors match our Porsches better. Though I will say even Dupli-Color shouldn't chip that fast, very strange. Almost like you had a film of some chemical on them. Did it start chipping and peeling after you tracked the car?

Nope...cleaned calipers, painted ~3 heavy coats, waited a few days to cure, then started removing the tape and scraping the overpainted area. Of course mounting the wheel with barely any touch and a large chip would occur.

The only thing I can think of is the temperature (~50 degrees when calipers were painted).

I did mine with a $5 can of rustoleum or something after cleaning theme up on a wire wheel, turned out great.
