Poll Black mugs or not

Interested in the forum's opinion on my black mugs, personally, I'm on the ropes with 'em. These are the original option 414 high gloss chrome 18"'s that I had blasted off and powder coated black. I was originally selling them, decided to mount.

Those are Ruff Racing 280 18"'s, brushed silver with polished lip. 8.5 front, 9.5 rear. Those rims are currently awaiting fresh rubber which will arrive next week.
I stuck with the standard fit (225/40, 265/35) to avoid the need for spacers.

super66 01-05-2008 01:07 PM

hey is that the same car in both pics of the sig? the grays look very different...

oh my opinion on the black rims...gross :D I like the rims in the other pic

yeah i woud have to agree, but black wheel in general look gross :)

the ones in ur sig look better on your car tho, black makes the wheels disappear completely, now if you had an accent stripe or sometihng maybe then

jwilson95 01-05-2008 01:50 PM

Tboyer-

I think they're terrible... now how much do you want for them? :D

Seriously, I have considered going with that look on my car and am glad to see a Seal Gray car with the black rims.

I really think what is throwing the look of is that you don't have a black top. The Seal Gray and the gray top adn the black might be too many colors together.

DJ or someone-Can you PS the top black and repost?

ddb 01-05-2008 01:51 PM

I like them! In general I'm a big fan of black wheels, especially on lighter colored cars.

i dont like the black rims but i do love the ones in ur sig :-)

turbo23dog 01-05-2008 05:41 PM

Another vote for the silver color of the rims in the sig. Also x2 on one of the issues being the mis-match up due to your gray top. I think it gives an appearance of the socks not matching the suit.

I've found pics of the seal grey can look a lot different, color-wise, from one time to the next depending on the light. (Maybe more so than some other colors.) Look---in a close up shot I made mine look blue! (No computer-adjustment on the color.)

BTW, I'm not too crazy about the black wheels, although I do think it looks better with the black top.

bmussatti 01-05-2008 06:18 PM

Too much black. Your seal grey and grey top looks great, though. :)

humara 01-05-2008 08:31 PM

i like the black wheels. certainly not for everyone i guess.
i think a matte or semi-gloss finish would be even better

LoveBunny 01-05-2008 09:06 PM

Just my opinion, but I don't think the black looks right with the color of your car. I like the silver much better. I think the black ones might like nice on a black car though.

tboyer 01-06-2008 03:48 AM

djomlas, thanks for the PS effort, love the clear tail lights and smarkers (next mods) Wheel lip in the body color might help

turbo23dog, jwilson95, I tend to agree, I do believe the wheels are lost, color wheel caps might help to break it up

LoveBunny, agreed, black wheels probably belong on a darker car, however, the PS shows with a black top and clear markers, it does bring it together

Like I mentioned, fresh rubber arrives this week which will be mounted on the silver 18's. These are going back on.

Up in the air whether to keep or sell 'em now. Is anyone interested? PM me if you are.

Thanks for the comments

I replaced the black wheel caps with color'd crests. I think it gives my car an improved look over the straight black. What do you think? Also, I learned that that the low point of the crest is suppose to point directly at the valve stem. Who knew Porsche would have such specifics about the wheel caps.

ddb 01-08-2008 02:45 PM

Have you thought about leaving a standard crest unpainted while painting around it black? This does break up the black a bit. Here is a pic of mine.

I think the color crest center caps (in person) look much better
than the straight black, however, I'm not impressed with the
overall look of black rims on my seal gray Boxster. Replacing
tomorrow with fresh rubber on my aftermarkets.

With that in mind, is anyone familiar with Antyre tires?
I purchased 4 for less $88 bucks a piece including shipping.
Antye is owned by a Chinese company, however, the tires
are manufactured in the U.K.

Link to the tires

They sound cheap, however, I got a REALLY good deal on them.
Similar load and ratings of a tire 2 to even 3 times as expensive.

tboyer 01-12-2008 03:55 PM

Ahhh, back to normal, silver wheels back on. Anyone interested in ready to mount black wheels, matching caps, and tires, I have them tucked away in my garage, PM me.

Sounds like it's a Chinese company and they're made in China. More info here:

I've found that my slate grey metallic looks a lot different depending on the light - and some of issue with a digital camera is the white balance. To get true colors you need to use some method of manual white balance with digital camera. Not to get into all the details of this (although I would be glad to elaborate if necessary) and depending on what camera you have usually you shoot a separate photo of a white piece of paper - or if you're into photography, an 18 percent gray card - which is getting the same light as your car (that is, don't have the white paper in the shade and car in the sun or vice-versa) and use that to calibrate your manual white balance. Colors will be very close using that method. However, unless your monitor is color calibrated it still won't look right on your monitor (but nothing else will either). I still haven't shot any photos of my car with manual white balance set in the camera. There are also ways to arrive at a fairly accurate white balance after the fact using Photoshop or the image processing software that came with your camera. In this case it helps to have something in the shot that is known to be pure white or pure gray to sample the color from.

I think the black wheels look okay, but maybe not on a porsche. Kinda gives it that ricer tuner look.

The best option for the center caps would be to paint around the crest black.

If you had the lip PC'd in seal gray and leave the spokes black they would look great, more so with a black top. I'm actually very curious to see what a seal gray box would look like with color matched lips and black spokes with the black top like mine.

As for the seal gray, the reason it looks so different in different lights is because it is a metallic paint and it reflects different colors more so than normal paint.
