Took out my Pop's 01 c2 last night to take some pics. It's pretty much stock other than the gt3 console delete,painted bumperettes and Carrera Classic wheels. He's installing a short shift kit and muffler bypass pipes shortly.

The torque difference between the 3.2L on my S and his 3.4L are pretty big. You can basically pass anyone or anything just by tapping the gas pedal.....I will find a way to make up for that.

Yes. It's really hard to take photos good photos at night because of it's dark color. I'm gonna retry when it's lighter.

I'm not a big fan of the 996 C2 unless it has a aero kit, but I'm sure you had a good time taking it out for a spin.

very clean, looks smooth, now adays its more un-common too see them without an aero kit, everyone opts for that.

Pretty car. I like the color and the wheels esp. Is it tan interior or gray?

It would look much more aggressive with a M030 suspension or HR lowering springs.

I've driven a 993 Carrera, but not a 996 so can't speak to the torque differences.

I'm such a stickler for details! Though incredibly similar, those 997 body style rims work with the 997 Carerra so well, whereas the 996 Carerra Lightweight rims compliment the 996 better. I'm not saying this car looks bad or anything, it's just amazing to me how the most subtle changes can enhance or disrupt "the flow."

It's Graphite Grey on the interior.

He's going to drop it,he can't decide on which suspension,RoW 030, X-74 kit,coilovers, there are too many choices for the 996.

I thought the 01 C2 had a 3.6? and the C2 S had a 3.8?

I can't imagine that the 3.2 vs 3.4 would produce that much more torque.

I personally didn't find the 99-01 Carreras to be that much more powerful than my BoxsterS. I once did back to back autocross laps in my car and a C2 and the times were very close. I have beaten C2's on many ocassions or at least matched them.
I really don't care for the clock pendulum cornering after being spoiled for years of my neutral handling. Yet some guys love that.
From a standing start I don't find the difference to be huge either. The BoxsterS and C2 seemed underwhelming but that's not what the cars were built for.
I've yet to drive a 3.4 Boxster but I imagine its very close in seat of the pants feel to a standard 996. Compared to the GT's and Turbo, well its better you never drive one of those if you plan on buying a C2 or C4. I thought my neck was going snap with the helmet still on my head the last time I was a passenger in my friend's GT3.

But the 996's are still the best looking 911's ever made in my opinion. Once the prices come down a bit more I will be picking up an 02-04 C4 as my winter beater.
I want to quit racking up winter mileage on my BoxsterS as it nears 50K miles.

As far as the muffler bypass you mentioned. I once had the muffler bypass very simillar to the PSE exhaust Porsche offers, and I have done straight pipes.

I am now looking into a few more options, what is your dad planning on doing with his muffler bypass you mentioned??

Nope, a 3.4L.


I can't imagine that the 3.2 vs 3.4 would produce that much more torque.

It has +46hp and +80lbs. compared to the 3.2L if I remember correctly.

Maybe those. Or getting some 3.6L cans and hacking them, it's supposed to sound EXACTLY like the PSE.

I have to disagree, seat of the pants feel on my 996 (3.6) compared to my 02 S, The 996 feels much faster, I also am finding the 996 to be more rewarding to drive hard... but than most of my track time has been in an old 3.2 Carrera...

Yeah I can definitely see the 996 being more "involved" than the BoxsterS.
Its not a point and squirt car like mid engine configs of the world.
I personally swear by point and squirt and can't imagine myself ever driving anything else in autox or track but some people find it too easy and boring.
Like a go kart I like a very tight, pointy car. (by the way have you been to the new indoor track near Parmaus Mall in Maywood NJ? You might want to check it before it closes like most "arrive and drive for only 7 minutes" operations)
The thing that bothers me about the more rewarding approach of rear engine car is that well after you have learned to drive in high peformance cars in general, you then have to learn to drive this particular car type to reap its rewards and stave off its unique down sides. I'm all for that if that extra work nets you an OVERALL advantage over a mid engine car as measured in quicker lap times. But that's not the case or its debateable at best.
I guess its all how you measure and define a rewarding driving experience.
