De-amber or not?

Votes please. I kind of like the orange and black combo, but my friends with newer Porsches are constantly telling me to upgrade. What do you guys think?

Anyone have a black car with the clear lights?

I never gave much thought to the amber lights on my silver boxster until I started reading the threads about deambering our cars. Then, once my attention had been drawn to the amber, it was like a worm in the back of my head, bugging me about how the car looked. In answer to your question, I think your car would look better without the amber.

Hey Noone

I think it's completely up to you, but like Edevlin, I find myself looking at every Boxster now after going to this forum looking amber/litronics/clear halogens. I've done the rear and sides and am waiting for a good deal on fronts.

This is about as good of a price for new units as I have seen:

I changed the side markers and the rears, but I like the look of the orange on the front of the black car.

I've got a 2001 seal grey that, when I bought it (summer '06), came with the fronts deambered. The sides and tail lights have the original amber. I'm in the minority around here (I think), but I kinda like that splash of color, at least on the darker colored car.

Or maybe I'm just too cheap and lazy to make the change. But I honestly don't think I'd be any happier with the clears. For me, it would be a change for the sake of change.

You be the judge:

I personally like clear lenses all around because I think they make the car look more modern and up-to-date.

Keep them

I like the look of the amber on certain colors. It seems the darker the paint I think the amber looks better. But like everyone else it is your personal choice. Mine is arena red and like the amber.

Noone,

I am torn myself. I still have the ambers on my black box, and I kinda like the way it looks as well. Sammy, another forum member and an autocross buddy, deambered his black box this year and I gotta say it looks great and a lot more modern. The question I ponder is it worth $1k - $2k simply to get rid of the amber ? On some colors I agree, but on black I just don't think it's worth the price...

Just my $.02

its really not that expencive, as long as you shop around.
up to $500 for halogen clears on ebay, just have to wait till a set shows up.

maybe get a drivers side, then wait for passenger and vice versa. no hurry if you dont mind the look

your car looks great tho

Purely automotive fashion. Blue and grey cars look much better deambered IMHO. Guards red and Black look fine both ways. If you need the latest wheels, color matched interior panels etc. you would probably want it deambered as well. If you bought the car to drive it and appreciate the Porsche designers original vision then amber lights become less important.

yeha, but porsche REDESIGNED the orange for clear, so its not like hes getting some cheap knockoffs. its still the same porsche, with newer porsche lights

btw, decide for yourself :)

I agree completely if it were only for the looks of the car. But the lenes of my 2000 boxster both have burn marks, probably from previous owners using the wronge bulbs. Also, I do night driving in the country where the litronics should be a big help.

If my stock amber headlights were in good shape, I would probably have just lusted for the litronics, but stuck with my stock lights. I should have my litronics in early next week, I will try to take before and after pics when I put them in.

I completely disagree.

I think this is the best cosmetic mod you can do to a black car. The very first day I de-ambered and added new wheels and drove out the garage, my neighbor commented on the new car. The amber looks like hell on the black more than other colors. I don't do mods for my neighbor to notice, but the point is, when I go to my garage for a peek before I go to sleep, I smile just a little bit more.

I posted this before, but can you think of one luxury car maker that does not come with projectors (like the litronics) as standard material now. Audi, BMW, Porsche, Aston, Maserati, Lexus, Mercedes, Bentley, Range Rover, Jag. It's an instant facelift.

I've said it before, amber works on red & yellow only in my opinion.

Spend $40 on the smoked sider markers (not clear, smoked). See how it grows on you. It's relatively inexpensive
and easy to change out in the rare event you don't like it.

When I see a Boxster, I gauge the driver's enthusiast level by the lights.
Clear = Potential Enthusiast
Amber = My husband bought this for me

What's your tail light situation like? Clear and red in the back make any Boxster look years newer!

noone986s 11-22-2007 10:01 PM

A subject that splits opinion.

Well despite the fact that my wife did not buy the car for me ;) I am going to leave the lights alone for now. I have booked the car in to have the brakes changed out for 6 piston GT3 items that I managed to get a deal on.

Cheers guys, maybe the lights can get an upgrade after Xmas.

Have a good weekend!!

Thanks DJ for the photoshop

Looks so modern with no orange.

Get it changed, you will find it is the best money you spend on the car, especially if you park next to a de-ambered boxster.

Agreed! I'm cleared front, back and sides. I hate the amber so much I went so far as doing the "amberectomy" on my headlights lol In my opinion it is a cosmetic must for the car.
