New Look - Wheels, Tires, Center Caps & Lugs

I'm not happy with the color of the paint I used on the center caps. I'm going to re-paint them a couple of shades lighter to better match the gray paint on the spokes. Other than that everything seems to be working well.

I love it!

bmussatti 08-04-2007 12:55 PM

Very nice!

SC986 08-04-2007 03:13 PM

Well, well, well. I should say you've got one more mod to do before we get the Boxsters together  Man that really looks great D! It really tranforms the look of your Boxster!

What tires and sizes did you go with?

Looks like your still happy with the hardtop off. Mine hasn't been off for three weeks.

Congrats!!

ddb 08-05-2007 03:36 AM

Thanks very much guys.

After a lot of reading I went with Goodyear F1 GS-D3's - 235/35/19 & 265/30/19. I was told/warned that I shouldn't go any larger on the rears due to clearance issues. I now know how others have felt when mounting larger tire/wheel combos. It didn't look like I would have enough clearance, but they work just fine.

It was between the Goodyears and PS2's. I knew the PS2's were great tires, but was also impressed with all of the reviews I read on the F1's. I haven't had Goodyears since I had VR-50's on a 1984 C4 Corvette decades ago, which were terrible. I went with the F1's based on the reviews, because I was able to save a few bucks, and lastly because I like the way they look.

SC986, I still haven't had a chance to install my interior pieces, but hope to do so soon. I'm loving the car without the hardtop although it is usually too hot for me to ride around topless. Your car looks great with the hardtop! Do you plan on keeping it on indefinitely?

SC986 08-05-2007 09:48 AM

Yeah, hardtop is on for good since we are sharing the same heat! I figure I'll either go hardtop or no top. The soft top is a thing of the past unless I get caught in rain.

Still need to get the window moldings right, alot of highway wind noise and the roof storage that came with it put up.

DDB-

Those are my favorite wheels Porsche has right now ever since I saw them on a 997 at my dealer. I also love them on Cayman and now the Boxster obviously.

Interested in how the 19's change the handling/ride.

Are they Porsche OEM or knock off/repros and where did you buy them?

thanks,

ddb 08-05-2007 03:03 PM

Jeff,

I agree - these wheels look good on all of the current Porsche cars. I had seen pictures of them on a 987, but when I bolted them to my car it was the first time seeing them on a 986.

I haven't driven the car enough to give you an accurate description of the change from 17" to 19". I drove really slowly because I was concerned with clearance issues when I put them on yesterday. I did some lock to lock turns, etc. and so far no signs of any problems.

They are replicas purchased from http://www.wheelsandcaps.com/porsche_specials.html via eBay. They are very flexible on pricing. Send me a PM for some more details if you're interested in getting a set. They would look really good on your Seal Gray 986S!

Great looking.

Are your rears 11.5 as stated on the website? Weight?

ddb 08-06-2007 02:24 PM

eVoMotion,

Thanks...

No, my rears are 10". They're available in both 10 and 11.5.

They are no lightweights. I measured 25 pounds on the fronts and 28 on the rears.

You can fit 295`s on the rears on 19`s with spacers it clears fine, and the ride quality is not that different at all from the stock 18`s I had on there

blkboxster 08-07-2007 12:14 AM

looks great,!!!! SO WHAT YOU DOIN WITH THE OLD WHEELS :D :D :D :D

noone986s 08-07-2007 12:59 AM

These look excellent. When you have a few miles on them I would be interested to know how the ride and handling is affected (if at all) on the street.

Thanks

ddb 08-07-2007 02:44 PM

Thanks for the compliments guys.

blkboxster: I think I'm going to just hang on to the old wheels for the time being. After some time on the new setup I may decide to get rid of them. They are in great shape and have Michelin Pilot Sports on them that are in great shape as well.

noone986s: As soon as I get some decent seat time on the new setup I will report what differences if any with the new combo.

nice man, only if those spokes were black hehehe.

no hardtop ey?

ddb 08-11-2007 03:33 AM

Thanks DJ. I've definitely thought about these wheels in black. It looks like it would be tough to paint or powder coat just the spokes, but I'm sure it could be done. Maybe something to do down the road to change the look (BTW, I like your caliper and wheel change).

wheels look great.

I like the contrasting color, but thats just one mans thoughts.

Franco 08-11-2007 06:38 PM

HI, Love everything about your car

eslai 08-11-2007 07:36 PM

I want these wheels so badly that it makes my peepee hurt.

I couldn't justify the $5000 or so that it would have cost though, so I only traded up for Cayman S wheels. Good, but.... *sigh*

Maybe on my next one.
