I'd suspect you have a bad clutch master cylinder. If not that, it'll be the slave cylinder.

Hi all - my 2003S has a gearstick knob that slides off the shaft too easily. I've checked it and there's no screw or anything to tighten it. Has anybody had/solved this problem?

Probably a rusted-out bolt in the catalytic converter shields. Reach underneath and see if either shield has play in it.
