I just RE-viewed the picture in post #15 you can see ring bits, valve head, and other bits.
If that hole got hot enough to cause a valve to drop you should see signs of excess heat on the ring...

You can burn hell out of valves and never drop them. I would want more "proof" that a vacuum...
