Thanks everyone for your help! In the end it was MARTHA's suggestion of holding the release switch longer when using the 12V jumper method.

when you say passenger... I should mention this is a north-american car. I mention this because this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRjO1xJ-5DY) shows it the NA driver side...

To make a long story short, the rear passenger-side drain in my '07 987 got plugged, resulting in some flooding...
