I've got a '97 with the 17" option. I would think any reputable tire/wheel shop would inspect the wheels to determine their condition. Probably good insurance to have them inspected.

Just a thought, but check your ignition switch. If it is stiff or not working correctly a whole lot of weird stuff can happen. Some of your symptoms can occur with a faulty ignition switch.

If coolant spewed everywhere it could indeed be the WP. I had an experience where my 986 dumped a ton of coolant near the right rear wheel well. Turned out the only problem was a bad radiator cap.
