You might want to check the cable at the transaxle end before yanking out the console. Mine had the same issue and the cable had popped off the linkage at the transaxle. It might save you some time.

I pulled the rear wheel off on the side that broke and was able to get my arm through to cut it. It took about 15 minutes including stopping a few times to check that I wasn't cutting the flange.
