something similar happened to me recently but without the engine grunt -- it was my power steering hose leaking onto the manifold.

Another area to check is the infamous AOS...good luck

Thanks for the advice -- I agree, I feel the two are related although from the online research it seems as though it could be the hydraulic lifters...dunno.
