Looking for 3.4, 3.6, 3.8 Dyno numbers
I'm wondering if anyone that has done an engine conversion has a dyno sheet. I would be interested in seeing the gains you get from the conversion.
Thanks, David |
If anyone need to use a dyno to verify baseline power figures, I have one in So. Cal. PM or call for details!

My 3.4 put down 280 at the wheels on Imagine Auto's dyno last spring. I haven't dyno'd my 3.6 yet, but it makes the 3.4 seem slow. For comparison if I remember correctly, their Supercharged 3.2 put down ~285 on the same dyno. The real difference with the larger motors is in the torque though.

With just my exhaust mod, I put down 239 at the wheels last December. I have since added an intake, which seems to have added a little more. I was also thinking about getting it flashed as well. The 280 for a 3.4 or 285 for the supercharger just doesn't seem worth the money. That's a lot of $$$ for 40-45 extra ponies. The 3.6 or 3.8 would be something that might interest me. I have also considered just dumping the Boxster all together, but I do like the car. It just needs more power. Although the 993 has always been something I have liked.
I would like to have something in the Boxster with around 350 at the wheels. Now that would be a fun car to drive. -David |
Comparing dyno numbers from different dyno's makes no sense, way too many variables. Also horsepower is not what makes the car more fun to drive on the street, it is torque. This is why an S2000 is not much fun on the road.

I know dyno numbers can be different, but they give you a good baseline to compare to without actually driving the cars back to back. I've been in Josh's SC 3.2. I have also been in a 3.4. I was just curious as to what the numbers are.
I agree on the torque. When I upgraded boats from a 5.0 to a 5.7, the rated HP only jumped 10, but the torque jumped a lot more. It definately got out of the hole a lot better. -David |

After driving both Monday and Tuesday with the top down, I just can't get rid of the car. I have been tempted to do a 996TT, but think I would miss the top down feeling. Unless I'm on the track, the Boxster seems to do just fine. I just think everyone always wants more power/speed. I'm also not sold on the 996 cab. The Boxster was designed as a convertible, where the 996 cab was not. If I did decide to give up the convertible, I would seriously consider a 996 GT3 or a 997S.
If I was going to do a 993, it would have to be turbo. As for the Z06, I'm staying far away from that. I just am not sold on that car. It just seems a little too big for a sports car. There are many of them at my work and it just doesn't fit my style. I've also been tossing around the idea of buying an older 911 or 944 Turbo as a 2nd Porsche. The only issue with that is I would have to get a lift installed in my garage. My wife says we already have too many things to insure so I'm not so sure on that yet. That's kinda why I've been leaning towards just dumping a ton of money into the Boxster. New engine, upgraded brakes, aerokit, etc. I can never make up my mind so next week it will be something else. -David |
Good point. I was also going to say a used 996 TT. Those things are now going for the same price as a new well optioned boxster S. A lot of car for the money there.

There's just something about the Boxster that I'm drawn too. When we have our local get togethers, there are only a few Boxsters there. Everyone else is in a 911. Now the GT2 and GT3s are the exception, but the others are pretty much the same. Yes some have been heavily modded, but they are all the same car underneath. It's fun being different. Josh (JP-s-in st. louis) likes being the sleeper car that keeps up with the others. The SC in his car definately helps out. I'm trying to drag him down to the track in a few weeks to get some 1/4 mile runs in to compare a non-supercharged car to his supercharged one (both S models). I know his car will spank mine, but it can give me hope for the Boxster.

I, too, am planning a 3.6 or maybe even a 3.8 as soon as my 3.2 gets tired. I will certainly agree, however, that a 996 TT is a hell of a car for the money now. VERY temping but I do think the open roof bit of the Boxster is worth something.

You might have a look at Farbacher-Loles or Ruf. They could probbly give you some numbers (including dollar figures!) on those engines in a Boxster.
