The install should be pretty much the same either with or without PCM, it's just easier to control the ipod with PCM. If you have a CDR24 control may be better than with the CDR23, either way the sound quality is great.

WoW! Sticker Shock!

I just got quoted that the 2point5 set up is now $699. I am having a heart attack. How did it go from $199 to $699? As much as I like it, $699 can buy me a CD changer already. it is way too much.

Check this out

After an entire afternoon of searching, I found this from the cayman forum. If you can't see this, click on this. It is much cheaper than the 2point5 and other system, about $200 and an hour of work. I am seriously thinking about this. Anyone did this install before?

Hope this helps someone else.

When doing the cable install last night I noticed that the pins on the back of the stereo needed to be aligned to push my connector on. To reach them, I removed the two other radio connectors...big mistake! The radio security code is now required...and I do not have it, nor does the dealer I bought the car used from. Took it to a dealer today and they said they could hook it to their machine which takes about an hour and $100. Madness. I tried the Renntech.com option that seemed to work for a bunch of people, but the codes they came up with do not work. ugh! Cable install - 20 minutes + code sourcing day 2 and counting.

evo,

I think they charge $25 but you may want to give these guys a try :

Hope this helps...

I started putting in random codes and it finally worked. Good to know now.

rick3000 11-14-2007 07:45 PM

^ Glad to hear your code worked, in the future sometimes people write them under the hood, on the option sticker, or in one of the manuals that came with the car. And the stealership can figure the code out in about 10 seconds there where just trying to get you to pay them $100.

If it helps anyone in the future check out my Registry Page in my Sig. I did a cool iPod AUX install that has both the powered iPod plug and a spare 3.5mm jack for anything else like a mini-DVD on road trips or a friends MP3. It took me a while and about $100, it would have been cheaper if I had know that I had half the parts I needed lying around my house.

evo, I didn't know that would happen. When I installed the cable in my Box I didn't have any trouble with the radio. Glad that you got it to work.

Hello, after reading this post I decided to order and install the 3 input aux connector (http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=1010) from discount car audio. I installed the cable and I get audio thru the 3.5 mm jack or the RCA's, but I do not get audio thru the ipod connector. I'm wondering if I did something wrong?
I have a 2001 Boxster with a CR-220 radio with a CD-changer. AUX was and still is enabled. I called the manufacture PIE and they told me that this connecter does not allow audio thru the ipod connector for the IPHONE because it lacks the requisite resistors. The ipod connector does charge the iphone, just doesn't play audio thru it.
Any information you can pass along will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have an Iphone also, does it not work with it?

I have the ipod dock cable only and it works both for charging and audio. I don't have an iPhone but my iPod video works great.]

Does NOT work for me

I received my new cable today (http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=993), and same results, charges but NO audio from my Iphone. I don’t know if it's because I have an Iphone or maybe because my radio is a CR-220 (opposed to a CDR-220???). So I'm going to use the original cable I bought with the 3 inputs, and connect this RCA cable (http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=1015). Hopefully this will allow me to charge and receive audio from my iphone. I'll post my results when the stuff arrives.

I tried to read through this thread but it was a little long. Did I miss if anyone got the one from Epiq? I did it works with a few different radios mine is a CDR-220 w/ EQ. Think it was shipped for $30. Then I went to Best Buy and got the Monster Cable RCA to mini jack for another $25. I am very happy with this set-up.

unavita 04-29-2008 08:31 AM

MN, I'm not sure about the Cable you mentioned, but the problem seems to be with the IPHONE specifically.

After speaking with PIE and other electronic companies apparently the iphone does not work with cables that are more sophisticated like I have purchased and listed below. So, there are apparently two options that I am aware of if you have an IPHONE: (1) The UNI POD from PIE (http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=887), or (2) the IC-RCA from PAC (http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=PACIFIC-ACCESSORY--PAC&ID=1254715&ref=GB). Both allow charging and audio for an IPHONE. I have called both companies and have been ensured these cables will work with the IPHONE. I just ordered the PAC cable and I will post results after installation.

NOTE: these cables above are to be used with any of the cables ( i.e. Becker, PIE, ect) that enable/allow RCA input into our radio.

unavita 05-06-2008 08:28 PM

Success.

Ok, I received the IC-RCA cable today from PAC and everything works with the Iphone: I have audio through the speakers and it charges my iphone. Note: the IC-RCA cable cuts audio out on the left speakers if the cable moves. *sigh* . Sooooo, I’m just going to draw the cable at an angle so it doesn’t move or cut out. I’m tired of ordering cables and reinstalling them. Hope this helps anyone with an Iphone.

this is a great thread. alot of good info and advise. I have been wanting to use my MP3 palyer in the car for a while, without using a fm mod.

From what i read in this thread and on discountcarstereo website, this seems like a good option. Does anyone have any advise on turning on the aux on a CDR-22 in a 06' 987. I dont have a 'PT' button to press... also any pics on how to use the radio removal keys too- I am not very mechanically inclined.

Solution found to retain cd changer

Adding an audio input in vehicles with factory CD Changer required disconnecting the cd changer.
The following is a quick an easy solution for those who wish to play an iPod or Mp3 player on the stereo system without having to disconnect the cd changer.

The folks at discount car stereo.com have told me that they have verified this process using the SON-AUX electronic audio switcher.

The Son-aux is an electronic switcher with RCA-type input and output (jacks and plugs). In order for this to work the vehicle must have a BUS cable and separate audio cables (red/white) from the radio to the cd changer location in the trunk.

Take a look at the SON-AUX wiring diagram:
http://www.discountcarstereo.com/pdf/son-aux2.pdf

1. Installation requires you disconnect the existing audio lines at the changer and connect them to the RCA jack on the SON-AUX (based on diagram its the RCA's at the top-- you will need an RCA adapter plug)
2. Connect the cd changer audio outputs to the Son-aux where it is labeled 1 "connect auxiliary device to RCA" you will need a short RCA cable)
3. Connect your audio device to Son-aux where is is labeled 2 "connect auxiliary audio device to RCA".
4. You will also need to connect the yellow wire to a constant 12V source and the black wire to ground.

How it works.
(Note: At least one "CD" must be loaded in the changer.)
1. Access your cd changer by pressing the button on the radio. The cd will begin to play.
2. To listen to your auxiliary device (iPod, MP3 etc) press play. The SON-AUX will interrupt the audio coming from the cd changer and switch to the auxiliary device.
Pause or stop the auxiliary device and after 10 seconds the Son-AUX will switch back to the cd changer. Its that simple.

A few tips.
iPod and MP3 users can use a simple 3.5 to RCA adapter cable. Use for audio only.
iPod only users can purchase a universal ipod cable which will play and charge your iPod via the dock connector.
Keep in mind that neither of the above cables will allow you to control iPod from the radio buttons.
