Just changed my gear oil
I just had my tranny gear oil on my 97 boxster with 104,000 original miles, I used 75w90 Max Gear from Royal Purple, prior to changing the oil i was starting to feel alittle kick on the gear shift lever when pulling out of first gear, But only when im being quick with the shifts. Not during normal driving. NOW however, the shifter goes into all the gears much much smoother and with lots more ease after a ride around the block through all gears.
Is it normal to feel results right away cause i tried to get the shift lever to kick out when shifting outta 1st gear all the way home but all seems well. I should go on the freeway to get fifth and fourth gears wet with the new gear oil. |
The manual says to change it at 90k , I had mine changed at around 85k . I felt a smooth shifting through the gears but it could of been all mental . I would say yes but maybe somew one could argue the opposite.

wow, 90k intervals, i would have thought like 60 or 75k intervals. Good to know, I still havent left to the freeways to really heat up that gear oil but as soon as the plumber leaves, ill go for a drive... Does anyone have crack spackel that i can offer the plumber :D

With manual transmissions there isnt the same heat/contamination level as with auto trans. Still, spirited driving can leave metal shavings over time.
90k intervals are fine but you could service it sooner and not feel guilty (especially if driving it hard) Oil is always cheaper syncro's. Assuming your driving it responsibly I wouldnt worry about your current service schedule. After the first trans service I would keep an eye on the fluid every few oil changes. Cars in the 100k+ realm tend to dirty their fluids quicker than new vehicles. Current service department standards (at least Ford dealers) are recommending auto trans flushes at 30k and manual trans drain/fill at 60k regardless of trans type. This is definitely more conservative than many of the owners manuals but fluid changes are high profit margin services and being over-protected is a safe approach. Added protection of high-end fluids from Royal Purple, Red Line, Motul, etc can definitely help in severe cases. |

I changed my tranny oil to Redline MT-90 and right away it was smoother in everything. I have put over 1k on it since and nothing has changed. |
