Official 986 to 996 Front-end Conversion Thread

Parts list
Parts w/o numbers
Total of Parts: ≈$6056 Do not take this list as gospel. It is, however, a great foundation as to what youll be getting into if interested in this conversion. All prices are estimates and do not include labor or paint. I do not know how to calculate the exact cost of labor (or paint for that matter), for it will depend on the speed, skill, and efficiency of yourself or your shop. But my estimate (considering I had other items tended to on the car) would be in the $750-$1250 for both labor and paint. That puts the total in the $7k range. Grand Total: ≈$7000 ±$250 If you have any questions about this conversion please feel free to ask. I'll do my best to answer them. Please note: I did not perform this work myself, rather it was done by German Technology, Inc of Euless, TX. http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-co...onprocess1.jpg http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-good-005.jpg http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-good-002.jpg http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-good-004.jpg Related Post: The (996) Wheels are in Motion |
Thanks for posting that, Jeph.
Worth every penny, IMHO ! Interesting that half of the total cost of the parts were just the lights  Nick |
That is one great lookin' car. Amazing.
|
Well done on both the conversion and on passing along the info, Jeph.
Enjoy! |

Here is one that was up for sale on excellencemag.com

i hate to post in a newly ressurected thread but Jeph has by far one the the most stunning silver boxsters i have ever seen.
|
Agreed, that car looks great!
|
I think he sold it a few months ago if I recall.
|
I was also looking to put 996 bumper on my base boxster, but found out what it would cost and changed my mind. I then wanted to put on an "S" type bumper, which cost the same as a base bumper, but the cost of the grills, trim , ducts and other parts built up quickly, so back on goes the stock bumper...
Ed  |
do you still have the 996 lights you bought? are you willing to possibly sell them
|
Nothing to say but well done to your conversion. How long it took you guys to complete this conversion?Where did you bought the parts?
|
It looks cool and makes your Boxster unique, nice job. IMO, what makes this blog and the cars fun are the small but often labor intensive styling cues people add to their cars. For me, if I ever drop 6K into the car I want to feel the difference in the driving experience.

My (interim) 330i is ok, but I still want a Porsche 911 so bad. |

anyone know what it would cost to do this if you did JUST the front bumper and left the lights alone...
i will likely be getting an ew bumper cover for my 986 and have thought of doing the 996 GT3 style bumper, like the bumper on trigems car or the bumper cover on the older 996's with the aero kits...they look a LOT like 986 bumpers but with a deeper set front lower lip... ...so my 986 lights will work just fine... can you jsut get THAT ubmper cover and stick it on the car or are there all sorts of different fasteners/etc that would make it a $$$ job. my ins will liikely pay for the bumper cover. |
The car looks great. Was the original car in an accident or did you just want a new look?

Hence why it's a "front end conversion", not a headlights and bumper conversion...
|
that really looks great and unique, but i would use the money towards a 996 or 997 cab
|
Your car is cherry. I'm in love. Good post, thanks for the part list; you're officially the man.
|
Oh Foxy, I miss you so much.
|
Hey Jeph,
Foxy is still one of the most tastefully modded Boxsters to ever grace these pages. Bravo! |
Conversion turned out really nice, great work! I was looking for something different without dropping the coin so I opted for the GT3 front end on my '99.

That's a ridiculous price to pay (half the value of the car) for something that looks nearly identical to the original. The stock litronics looks great on the 986. If I were spending that kind of money on a headlight conversion, I would go with this
one.http://www.kryzak.com/storage/986-987-986probs.jpg |
