Cracked bearing race on outer CV joint
 
Blew an outer CV joint boot at a track day, discovered this lovely failure when rebooting the axle last night. Odd failure mode. The race is cracked all the way around. No noise or warnings this was failing.

PN is 986-332-024-59. Whats the lowdown on axles now? Suncoast has them at $1000 each, Porsche proper are even more expensive. Pelican sells a DSS aftermarket. FCP has bubkis.

All aftermarket/remanned units complete junk? I've got boot kits and redline cv-2 grease already, do I just reboot a cheap axle and send it, expecting a failure very quickly? Hunt for a used unit to reboot? These are CVs a dead simple part... no reason they cost $1000

Hell, I have been eyeing the rock auto complete axles for cheaaap if mine need replacement (repacking has been good so far though).


Looks like they took some heat. When were they repacked?

They definitely took lots of heat for the 19min they survived on track. I never repacked the joints, supposedly this axle is only 1.5 years old (25kmi). Seller provided receipts of a new axle installed by dealer just before my ownership. It looked new enough when I dropped the engine and trans to do the IMS and chain guides (among everything else engine related).

It being a new Porsche axle doesn't make any sense though. The etched number pe10501 on the shaft returns some very sketchy SLCUKMT branded amazon listing. This broken axle joint is same style as all the rest of the aftermarket axles (rock auto type). And it doesn't match the other side of the car (which I assume based on looks is original from factory)

Was there a design change or parts update to the aforementioned aftermarket style, where the boot is clamped around the large hub of the outer joint?

Moreover, the GNK boot kits that all the reputable websites (pelican, fcp, autohauz, etc) call OEM don't fit the interior joint on the assumed original axle. The boot is sized to the OD of the retention plate, not the ID where the plate clamps the boot to the joint. The boot is also too short to use on the exterior joint, though the IDs fit the shaft & joint surfaces correctly.
The kit will fit the inner joint of the aftermarket axle, but is the wrong size for the outer. Too bad I originally ordered 4 boot kits.

Anyway, I have a new DSS axle from Autohauz now... though I fully expect it to catastrophically fail on the first drive after install. Haven't decided if I will repack them, if I damage the boot, I have no means of sourcing a replacement. It will probably get returned for credit after I source a used Porsche axle.

Like 99% sure I am searching the right part number. Porsche catalog lists 986 332 024 50/52/53/55 as the axle p/n for m008/480 which is the 6sp manual. The -59 p/n I listed in my OP was taken from the Suncoast Porsche diagram.
