Intermediate shaft plain bearing end damage

I'm rebuilding my 98 2.5 that spun a rod bearing on #1. I got another crank and I thought the intermediate shaft was ok, but on closer examination found damage at the plain bearing end face. I'm not sure how that occurred because that face does not run up against anything. Here's a picture.

Has anybody seen this kind of damage before or have an idea of how it could have happened? Do you think this shaft is still usable?

I have a couple shafts lying around in the garage, one has similar marks. I think it's factory since that surface in not in contact with anything, as you pointed it out. I assume you inspected the the inner surface of the engine halves and the oil pump housing with te bearing external where the IMS runs. I can see some discoloration on the shaft, or is it just reflection? PM me if you need a replacement.
