Will this DME engine swap scenario work?
 

hi,

I have a 2001' boxster base 5sp 2.7 liter five chain running DME 7.2 this engine is in need of having case open rebuild. so I need a new engine.

I want to swap in this low mileage engine I have already found. The new engine is a boxster 2003' base 5sp 2.7 liter 3 chain running DME 7.8

can I swap the 3 chain engine complete with engine wiring harness and dme 7.8 into my 2001' boxster?

If i have the 7.8 DME married to my immobilizer and keys can the rest of any adaptations be done with my durametric pro?

The 7.2 and 7.8 are quite different and such a swap is going to require a lot of rewiring or repining of the harness connectors as they are significantly different between the two versions.

And then there are the differences in the fuel systems to contend with..................

in this scenario i'm thinking, i would be using the ; dme 7.8 module, engine and engine harness all from the donor vehicle. is the re-pinning between the dme and the engine harness? or between the dme and the rest of the car? both?

i have read other posts where this swap is being made but they are done with swapping in a dme 7.8 module and 3 chain block then modifying the car existing engine harness for actuators and pinout.

any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I have referenced this post on Renntech a few times: https://www.renntech.org/topic/51783-boxster-dme-72-to-78-transplant/ There's a spreadsheet that shows some of the wiring differences. The body harness to the DME will need changes.

The fuel system in 2001 and earlier 986s has a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail and a return line to the tank. 2002 and later 986s have the regulator in the tank and only one line to the rail. [Swap fuel system from the tank to the engine or maybe swap the fuel rail from the '01 engine '03.]

OK, i have gone with plan B and bought a used identical replacement engine. it's a 2001' 2.7 liter with 29k miles. oil changed every year mostly at the porsche dealer with records. i think i just saved myself a bunch of time and car will be more original. thanks everyone
