Top motor issue

I have an issue with my convertible top that seems to be getting worse. When I put the top up or down, I hear a "whir, whir whir" noise from the motor. I'd like to address this, but I don't know if it's the top top transmission or the motor. Any guesses? Thanks for your help.

Tony - it’s not entirely clear what the problem is. Are you thinking that the sound has changed over time, or that you don’t like the noise that it’s always made? Mine is far from quiet, and has been that way for the last 18 years and 190k miles.

Obviously, the motor has always made noise. But recently, the top action and the noise are less smooth and more pulsing. It's not quite jerky in its motion, but it's jetting worse.
