Did the 'poor man' OBC mod, cluster lights stay on

Hello all,

I'm not sure what I did wrong here, but I did the 'poor man' OBC mod as described in the 101 projects, I used the proper wire connectors for the cluster plug, and inserted them in the proper positions, and after doing that, all of my cluster lights stay on, although slightly dimmer than normal. If I take off the parking brake I can see the light gets a bit dimmer, but still stays on, same for the ABS, brake pads, check engine, battery, wing, etc. I have even tried unplugging the switches, and it still does it. It seems like there is something grounded that shouldn't be, but I can't seem to trace it down.

When I had the cluster out I tried to swap in LED bulbs, but they didn't work at all so I swapped in all new bulbs, and still no change. I know for sure that prior to doing the mod there were no lights on and they were working properly, so it's obviously something I've done, I just can't figure out what. My next test is to try removing the new pinned wires from the cluster harness and see if that changes anything, but if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.

Well, I did a lot of driving on the weekend, and just before I got home I hit a decent size bump in the road (they are doing sewer line work in our town so all of the roads have cutouts across them, so filled better than others) and now the lights are working properly...which is both good and bad. Good that they are working, bad that I don't know what the issue was, and why hitting a bump fixed it.

My guess is you had either a short that is now unshorted or a loose connector that finally seated.

If the dash lights are all functioning properly now, I would leave it alone and see what happens. If it's the former, it will cause more trouble. If it's the latter, it may not.

Agreed. Not sure where the issue was as I have played with the cables a bunch and nothing made a difference. At this point I'm leaving it alone, if it happens again I'll have to tear into it more deply.
