When you first posted I remembered reading some Jake Raby discussion about mixing various M96 engines. I never found the posts. They are probably on Rennlist.

You may check more specifically about your plan. What parts from which engine; crank and carrier, heads, pistons, rods, ..? I have no idea, but I know some of it has been discussed.

A quick search for the bore and stroke shows that they both have a 78mm stroke and the bore is 93mm in the 3.2 vs 96mm in the 3.4. That suggests to me that you'll need the pistons from a 3.4, but the rods and crank are probably compatible. The mating surface on the head of 2.7L and 3.2L engines I've seen is flat with a recess for the valves, so if the bolt holes and passages all align I'd expect that you can bolt a 3.2L head on a 3.4L engine and have it work. Next, I'd look at the valves, expecting the 3.4L engine to have larger valves for better flow.

I may take some more time looking at it late tonight. Not planning to do it, but curious.

A while back I started a post titled "m96 Frankenstein?". There is significant overlap in parts, but there are some issues. You will need new pistons. The head bores will also be wrong. Lastly, the intake bolt pattern of the 2.5/2.7/3.2 and the 3.4 are different. I know of at least one successful retrofit of a 3.4 intake plenum on a 3.2 - you will need to tap new mounts.

These are the issues that came from that discussion. There very well could be more as well. I think it would be a great project though to try if you can do it without dumping a ton of $.

If you need stock 3.4 pistons I have two sets . I punched my 1999 996 3.4 to 3.8 so I have that set . Plus I bought a spare engine to salvage the crankshaft so I have that set of pistons also . I think they still have the rings on them .

A little more info here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/1124013-996-3-4l-and-986s-3-2l-differences.html

According to Byprodriver, who built a few upgraded engines, the heads & cams are the same - That would be with the exception on the mounting for the intake. If you are using the 986 S intake and head, that is not an issue.

I trust Byprodriver - He hasn't logged on the forum for over 6 months, but he'd be a great source for the build if he answers a message.
