987 S transmission swap (do I need new coilovers)
I need to swap out my base model 5 speed and axles to a 987S setup but I’m hoping I can start with just the transmission. If not I’m hoping I can swap out the axles, uprights and keep my non-S coilovers. Poking around online it looks like my coilover’s diameter is too small for the S uprights. Those of you that have done this conversion do you have any advice?
PS: can I use the axles, uprights and trans form a 987 or do I need some 986 parts? |
I'm pretty sure the difference in coil over diameter is 986 to 987 rather than 2.5/7 to S.
To go 987S gearbox you can use 987 axles into 986 S hubs but you need to take apart the 987 driveshafts and fit the 986 ends onto them as they have the ABS reluctor ring built in. I think you'd probably need 986 S driveshaft ends to do this. When I did it I tack welded the ends back on as they aren't designed to come apart and ran a silicone bead around them. I've got a spare set of axles I put together but shipping to the USA probably makes it not viable. If you go 986 S hubs you need to use the discs and calipers from an S also unless you are ok to lose the handbrake. |

When I was going to try and adapt my 986 PSS9 to my Cayman, I bought a set of those style of sleeves from MCS (who also has kits that are for both 986 and 987), but I returned them after I decided to abandon that project... I Seem to recall that they were bout $100 for the 4, so if you just need 2, it might only be around $50? |
